Beta Phi Mu
Founded in 1948 by a group of leading librarians and library educators, Beta Phi Mu is an international honor society to recognize scholastic achievement and leadership potential among library and information science graduates. Beta Phi Mu was admitted to membership in the Association of College Honor Societies in 1969 and became affiliated with the American Library Association (ALA) in 1998.
Eligibility: Eligibility for regular membership in Beta Phi Mu is by invitation of the faculty from the ALA-accredited master’s programs in library and information studies. Criteria for membership in Beta Phi Mu consists of three elements:
New members must have at least a 3.75 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.
New members must have the faculty’s endorsement regarding their potential for professional leadership and contributions to the field of library and information science.
No more than 35% of the annual graduating class can be selected for membership. There is no guarantee that all graduating students who mee the GPA requirement will be selected for nomination.
Selection: Upon graduation, student records will be evaluated by the GSLIS Admissions, Academic Standing and Student Affairs (AASSA) Committee for possible nomination for membership in Beta Phi Mu. The AASSA Committee will bring forward names for nomination, and the full faculty of GSLIS will vote on all nominees. Selected students will be notified and invited to join Beta Phi Mu by its headquarters. Current lifetime membership fees are US $100 for domestic US addresses, and US $115 for non-US addresses. For more information about the selection process, please contact the GSLIS office or see the Beta Phi Mu Handbook.
