MONDAY 7/13

hip hop dance

Dancing is a beautiful way to tell a story through movement and hip hop provides an outlet for energy and artistic expression. In this session, kids will get active learning the basics of hip hop. This session promotes memory and creativity.

Materials: A large, open space and comfortable clothes

scratch coding: Make a game!

Scratch is a free programming language that is easy for kids to use! In this activity, students will be able to learn the process of coding in a simple and exciting way. Through Scratch, kids are able to begin to work on the skills needed to code more complex projects. This session promotes memory, processing skills, and problem-solving. This week, our mentors will be leading students through coding a small game!

Materials: https://scratch.mit.edu/ account and a device (preferably 2 devices to make learning easier)

*Note: This session is best suited for 2nd-5th graders.*

Tuesday 7/14

Create-a-dragon craft

Creating a pet dragon is as easy as using the supplies you have in your own home! This activity is a fun way for your child to grow their abilities in precision and creativity!

Materials: An empty toilet paper roll, construction paper in any color, glue/tape, scissors, googly eyes, pom poms, tissue paper in different colors. OPTIONAL: Anything else that you'd like to decorate your dragon with! (ex: glitter, markers, etc.)

zoology Jeopardy

Zoology is the scientific study of animals and humans. This session is the perfect introduction to such a complex field through a short presentation and exciting game! In this session, we will focus on the characteristics of the six major animal classes and how to distinguish them. This session promotes critical thinking and observation skills.

wednesday 7/15

DIY bird feeder

This cool craft is a must-try this summer! Making this bird feeder is an amazing way to express creativity and make an amazing craft with household items! Our mentors will lead you step by step through how to make a beautiful DIY bird feeder! This might get a little bit messy so parents/guardians are welcome to assist younger children.

Materials: a paper lunch bag, tape, yarn/string, scissors, stapler, a stick (chopstick, skewer, popsicle stick, or regular stick), a hole puncher, and markers

math bingo

Math is a fundamental part of daily life and is needed in almost all career paths. With this session, kids can review familiar mathematical concepts and expand their knowledge in a fun and exciting game! This session promotes memory and analytical thinking.

Materials: The template that we will send all those who signed up, some way of marking your tiles (coins, using a highlighter, etc.)

Thursday 7/16

Sock bunny Craft

This craft is such a fun way to develop a child's creative mind to make fun objects with household items! Our mentors will lead students step-by-step to making a beautiful, fun sock bunny! This session promotes creativity and precision!

Materials: A sock, a marker, string, ribbon, scissors, and a filler such as rice or beads (optional: tape)

Pepper and soap Experiment

This experiment is a fun way to learn more about chemical reactions and the properties of different chemicals with household items. Guided through the experiment step by step, your child will expand their scientific knowledge in a fun, household-friendly way. This session promotes critical thinking and scientific analysis. We encourage parent/guardian supervision.

Materials: a bowl, water, pepper, and liquid dish soap

Friday 7/17

yoga

Yoga is a calming activity consisting of breathing techniques, stretches and exercise to calm the mind and body. Through yoga, students can attain many benefits, including better relaxation skills, decreased levels of stress, self care skills and more!

Materials: Comfortable clothes and space

Magic tree house read-a-loud

Reading serves as a productive past time and expands vocabulary and knowledge! Led by the founders of Project Teens Teach, kids will be able to listen and discuss a book from the hit series The Magic Tree House. This activity is great for kids to relax and have fun as well as follow along to the adventures of two siblings, Jack and Annie, and their adventures through history!

Materials: Nothing!

Saturday 7/18

What's inside my head art project

This craft is perfect for kids to express their interests through creativity and art. Our mentors will lead students through a fun and engaging activity where kids can draw out their thoughts! This session promotes self reflection and creativity.

Materials: Paper and markers (or anything that can be used to color!)

Coding: Hide and seek

In this session, students will learn a more advanced coding language than Scratch, but in a fun and easy way! This session is a great stepping stone to begin to work on the skills needed to code more complex projects. This session promotes memory, processing skills, and problem-solving. Our mentors will be leading students through making a fun hide and seek game on Scratch!
