Puerto Rican Peso

The Puerto Rican Peso

The Puerto Rican peso was a local currency used in Puerto Rico during the Spanish era and a limited time during the U.S. era. To exercise more control over our economy and impoverish the people of Puerto Rico, the U.S. colonial military government, via military decree, reduced the value of the Puerto Rican peso by 40% and then abolished the Puerto Rican currency and imposed the U.S. dollar as the official currency of the colonial government.

This project that I propose to restore the Puerto Rican peso would be primarily a community project that would have a regional and national reach, impacting and benefiting thousands of Puerto Ricans and Puerto Rican communities. In addition to being an important project that would impact Puerto Rico, the restoration of the Puerto Rican peso would also be our “cry for economic freedom” to create and forge our own economy in our own hands with our own efforts.

What is the Puerto Rican Peso?

The Puerto Rican peso (₽) will be the national and community alternative currency only used and valued in Puerto Rico to promote solidarity economies and community development. The Puerto Rican peso, represented by the monetary symbol (₽) and the PRP ISO code, will be a national alternative currency and complementary to the U.S. dollar in Puerto Rico.
