Javier A. Hernández

Javier A. Hernández, born in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico, is a Puerto Rican father, author, artist, linguist, entrepreneur, world traveler, decolonization advocate, and indigenous rights activist. Javier earned a B.A. in Political Science & International Relations from Florida International University; an M.A. in International Communication from The American University; and an M.S. in Education from Lehman College. Javier has also earned certificates in Diplomacy of Small States, Emergency Management, Homeland Security Planning, Global Security Issues, and Non-violent Conflict & Civil Resistance. Javier is committed to social justice, cultural activism, indigenous rights, and decolonization.

Javier is a recognized linguist and is currently one of the few people in Puerto Rico and the United States who are members of the International Association of Hyperpolyglots, being able to speak nine languages and read thirteen other languages. In 2018, Javier also reconstructed and revitalized a modern variant of the indigenous Taino language of the Caribbean and published its first primer, which is being used in various indigenous school programs in Puerto Rico. Regarding Taino and indigenous rights, education, and cultural development, Javier is the Director of Diaspora Affairs of the Naguaké Taino Community of Puerto Rico and a supporter of the Naguaké Taino pictographic alphabet. Javier is currently working on a team project to reconstruct and revitalize Aljamiado (عَجَمِيَة), the modified historic Arabic script used by Spanish Moriscos to write the Spanish language over 500 years ago.

Javier is a small business owner, an independent security consultant, a survival & emergency preparedness instructor, and has experience in the federal government and the private sector. Javier, founder of FlagArts.co, is also a flag enthusiast and artist having designed the proposed National Coat-of-Arms of a Sovereign Puerto Rico (2013), the Flag of the Puerto Rican Diaspora (2018), the Flag of Santurce-San Mateo de Cangrejos (2005), various other Puerto Rican cultural and regional flags, astronomy flags, and a proposed Flag of the Earth. In 2017, Javier founded Editorial Libros El Telégrafo, a small boutique publisher.

Javier also supports Puerto Rican agricultural initiatives and platforms. Javier is interested in vexillology, comparative politics, languages and language education, political geography and strategic geopolitics, national development issues, and national state-building policies. Javier is married and has four children.
