A Tribute to Late Prof. (Dr.) Adel Mahmoud Torieh

I lost a very close friend, Late Prof. (Dr.) Adel Mahmoud Torieh, in Cairo, Egypt on 20 May 2021. We met as colleagues, at Skyline University College, Sharjah UAE. We joined our teaching positions on the same day, and had neighbouring chambers. Very soon we became close friends, but my friend Abu Mahmoud (as I called him endearingly), moved to Saudi Arabia within a few months, for another teaching position. We remained in touch for over a decade, and he (successfully) looked for jobs, for me, near him, so that I could join him again, but destiny had it otherwise. A few years ago, he lost his wife, and I planned to visit him in that difficult hour, but due to some bungling by my travel agent Egypt was left out of my travel itinerary. He, likewise, wished to visit Delhi, but somehow it did not work out. He taught me a lot, about the Arab culture, thanks to him I could adjust so well and so easily in a new environment. He was a simple man, and very religious and pious, I remember how once I could not eat seeing him observe the difficult holy fast in the month of Ramadan, and joined him in fasting.

What his children wrote to me today, ‘Pray for him, he always talked about you and loves you as his brother’, is hauntingly true. I thank God for sending such a wonderful Human Being my way. If I can say a thing about him, it would be that he knew the true meaning of human relationships, his friendship was pure and unselfish. Dr. Adel has been a pillar of strength to me. May he rest in peace!

A Tribute to Late Mr. Vinod Sharma:

I am sorry to inform that we lost Mr. Vinod Sharma at 4:30 PM on 18 May 2021. He recently had a bout of Covid. He was a senior poet, and I consider him as my mentor in the field of Hindi poetry. Recently, I translated some of his Hindi poems into English, and P3 poetry group organized a book release function for the same. He was working on more publication projects until the very last. Some time ago, when I talked to him, he was full of enthusiasm and creative ideas, and as always we discussed poetry, books and publication. Sadly, he could not see the forthcoming P3 anthology that carries some of his poems also. It is a personal blow to me, and it is a big loss to the field of Indian and international poetry: he translated poems from many foreign languages into Hindi and acted as a cultural bridge. I remember, I started my journey of poetry in public life with him, after a chance meeting at the All India Radio, from a forum called ‘Dialogue’ that I assisted him in creating at the Academy of Fine Arts and Literature located at Siri Fort Road, Delhi. I remember our visits to the Delhi Book Fair, meetings at poetry events, and our participation in literary events. My shraddhanjali to the departed soul May his family, and friends have the strength to bear the loss.
