Highlight Maker Hoops

Frequently Asked Questions

Universal Rule for Board Games - Players Decide Ambiguity: If players ever arrive at a situation not covered in the rulebook, and the rules offer no definitive answer, then players should feel free to decide what happens.

Purchasing Information

Q: I didn't receive my code for the 2020-2021 season PDF download, what do I do?

A: Reach out to info@plaay.com

Q: Can individual stats be tracked with Highlight Maker Hoops?

A: No, just the quarter-by-quarter scores and the final score.

Q: I would like to sleeve the FAC Cards, any suggestions?

A: One of the community members recommended: Standard American 2 1/4 inch X 3 1/2 inch or 57 X 89mm

Gameplay - Free Throws

Q: Do free-throw's reset at the end of each quarter, or do they carry on throughout the game?

A: They do not reset and carry on throughout the game.

Q: Can the free throw value go higher than 9?

A: Yes, move the token back to the zero space, indicating 10, and continue from there.

Q: If a player shoots a FT after an "and one", do they still rotate after the play is resolved?

A: Yes

Q: Do you compare the foul rating of both players on all FLOOR CAM REF LOOK cards?

A: No. You only compare qualities when the card has the words REF CHECK with the checkmark symbol. For the other cards, the REF LOOK FAC will tell you which player is shooting the free throws.

Q: Who wins a REF CHECK when one player has a "circle star" and the other has a "clover leaf".

A: Neither, this is a tie - use the tie-breaking rules.

Gameplay - Scoring Adjustments

Q: If a quarter ends because one team hits the scoring cap, how many cards must remain in the FAC deck for the other team to receive an extra space on the scoring track?

A: 2 or more. If there are 0 or 1 cards left, the other team does not receive an extra space.

Gameplay - Actions Between Quarters

Q: I know that I can re-arrange my team deck at the half; can I also do this at the beginning of the 2nd or 4th quarters?

A: No, you can only cycle the ACTIVE player (forward) once at the beginning of the 2nd and 4th quarters. In other words, you can start the 2nd and 4th quarters with the current ACTIVE player, or the player next in the stack. The rules are slightly ambiguous here but it was confirmed with Keith that this is the intention. Note that this is only an OPTION, and you don't have to cycle the ACTIVE player if it doesn't make sense to do so.

Q: When setting the scoring caps for the next quarter, if two teams are tied they are both capped at 5. But what if one of the teams is ahead on Free Throw points?

A: From Keith: "I'd cap both at 5 if it was the second or third quarter, and give a 6 point cap to the trailing team if it's the 4th quarter."

Gameplay - Fouls

Q: I was playing a game with the home brew college teams, and a foul check came up. One player had no ref quality the other player had two ref ratings - a circle star and a burst how exactly do you read that?

A: This "two foul rating" mechanic is unique to the home-brew NCAA set. It's in the readme that comes with the set - use the first symbol unless there's a tie, then use the second.

Gameplay - Lightning Status

Q: When it says that a team can use the lightning bolt if they scored on the last FAC, do these situations count as "scoring on the last FAC"?

-- an "And one ..." result on a Ref Check

-- getting a bucket off a Time Out card

-- an Unusual Play card

A: Yes, these situations all count as scoring on the last FAC. Note that for the purposes of this game mechanic, "the last FAC" does not include a FAC discarded as a result of a Time Out card. In other words, the Time Out card is still considered "the last FAC."

Gameplay - BENCH CAM and Subs

Q: I've played games of HMH and a team in both games only have one substitute added for the whole game. Just luck of the draw i haven't had many coach cards? Could I be playing the game wrong?

A: This is nothing to be concerned about. Depending on how the FAC deck has been shuffled, sometimes you will get few-to-none, and sometimes you will get many. More importantly, remember that this is a highlights game and that substitutions are abstracted. A lack of BENCH CAM cards doesn’t mean that bench players weren’t used - it just means they didn’t contribute significantly in the game.

Q: I know you add subs whenever a BENCH CAM comes up. Once a player is subbed into the stack do they ever come out of the stack or do you just leave them in from that point in for the rest of the game?

A: Subbed players will never come out of the stack unless they happen to be the ACTIVE player when a BENCH CAM card calls for the active player to be taken out of the game.

Gameplay - Defense Check Chart

Q: I rolled an unusual result that requires me to use the Defense Check chart. What am I supposed to do?

A: Check the number of defensive qualities on the indicated players card. These will be the 5-letter "play" qualities with either a star or square symbol next to them. Underlined qualities count as two.

Gameplay - Final Minute Mini-Game

Q: In the final minute are we to assume that a missed shot has hit the rim for a shot clock reset if an offensive rebound?

A: Yes.

College Basketball

Q: Are there any special rules or charts when playing with College teams?

A: There are no special rules, but you should use the college scoring grid when playing with college teams. The grid can be found on Travis Jansen's Google drive here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1KtU0f5huLKU96X5eacu9etV27pyLgS41?usp=share_link
