Working at the American School of Barcelona was an amazing opportunity for me. I have always wanted to live abroad, so I seized the chance and headed to Spain. At that time, the library at ASB was on the bottom floor of the school and it was dark, dusty, small, and full of ancient, unused books. (The director told me all of this when he offered me the job, so I knew coming in that I had my work cut out for me!)
The American School of Barcelona is a K3-IB school, meaning they have 3 year olds all the way up to 18 year olds. All elementary classes visit the library once a week for 45 minutes and I taught them Information Literacy skills and Readers' Advisory. In the past, middle and high school students had little interaction with the library - something I worked hard to change. I was able to teach a middle school library elective, which was hugely popular with the kids and proved successful.
