This is the Robotic Operating Buddy (or commonly known as R.O.B.). He was originally an accessory for the Nintendo Entertainment System & Famicom Disk System and was used for Stack-Up and Gyromite. Even appeared in other Nintendo such games such as Mario Kart DS. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, R.O.B. was the Ancient Minister and the leader of his kind. Seeking to avenge his fallen brethren, he joins the heroes to stop the Subspace Army.

Connection: R.O.B. and Knuckles are currently the last of their kind. Originally they were seen as villains in The Subspace Emissary and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 until it's revealed they've been tricked by the main villains and decided to join the heroes on their quest to stop them.
