The Open Parametric Hand (OPH) is a low-cost, open-source platform for investigating the role of morphology in manipulation.
Inspired by the shortcuts and 'design' optimisations seen in nature, we developed the OPH for large-scale testing in the real world, investigating and modulating behaviours emerging from hand-environment interactions, and maximising functionality while minimising actuation and control complexity.
Aside from a research platform, the OPH offers numerous practical advantages in applications such as prosthetics, agricultural harvesting, logistics sorting, and intelligent manufacturing. From its light weight and aesthetic customisability for comfort and acceptance in prosthetics, to cost-competitive functional optimisation in the next generation of automation tasks.
We are a team of researchers at the Computational Robot Design & Fabrication Lab with a focus general-purpose manipulation through intelligent physical design and exploiting interactions.
