WHAT IS DOCTRINAL MASTERY?
Doctrinal Mastery focuses on two outcomes:
Learn and apply divine principles for acquiring spiritual knowledge.
Heavenly Father has revealed principles for acquiring spiritual knowledge. These principles include:
Acting in faith,
Examining concepts and questions with an eternal perspective, and
Seeking further understanding through divinely appointed sources.
We develop doctrinal mastery as we apply these principles during and outside of class and seek answers to doctrinal, personal, social, and historical questions in a way that invites the Holy Ghost to strengthen our faith in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
2. Master the doctrinal mastery scripture passages and the doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ that they teach:
Knowing the doctrine taught in the doctrinal mastery scripture passages.
Explaining the doctrine clearly using the associated doctrinal mastery scripture passages.
Being able to remember and locate the doctrinal mastery scripture passages and memorize the key scripture phrases.
Applying the doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the principles of acquiring spiritual knowledge in our daily choices and in our responses to doctrinal, personal, social, and historical issues and questions.
Each year there are 24 Doctrinal Mastery passages, or verses, that we learn. There is a different set of 24 passages for the Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, and D&C.
Every passage has a Key Statement which is an important truth to learn from those verses.
For example, Alma 41:10: "Do not suppose, because it has been spoken concerning restoration, that ye shall be restored from sin to happiness. Behold, I say unto you, wickedness never was happiness."
The Key Statement for this passage is: "Wickedness never was happiness."
We also give it a rhyme to help remember them. E.g. Alma 41 - Unhappy wicked one

A Message from Cherie - your Admin Assistant
I like to do Doctrinal Mastery daily. Not only does it help us learn and memorise the passages faster, it has the bonus of waking the students up in the mornings so they are more alert for the lesson 😉
Now that we no longer teach all of the DM passages, I am going through the list in the order they appear in the scriptures. I have listed the order on the Pacing Guide as "Suggested DM Practice".
My Routine
Monday - Tuesday: 8 minutes
Straight after Opening Exercies, recite the passage for the week out loud together (including the key statement and rhyme).
Play one of the DM Games that is just for 1 DM passage (see the Games Website link below).
I will take a couple of minutes on the Monday to discuss it since there is a good chance we haven't had the lesson for it yet.
Wednesday: 8 minutes
As above, but play one of the DM Games that is for all the DM passages we've learnt so far this year. (It takes a few weeks to be able to do this.)
Thursday: 15 minutes
We have the lesson straight after Opening Exercises. It is a slightly shorter lesson so we have time for one of the longer DM Games at the end of class. It's a cheerful way to finish the week. Make sure you mix up the teams each week so the students get to know each other.
