WHAT IS THE ASSESSMENT?
In the Pacing Guide you will see lessons titled "Assess Your Learning". These lessons are the Assessment. They provide students with opportunities to assess themselves by:
Explaining doctrine they have learned.
Reflecting on their feelings, attitudes, and desires related to Heavenly Father’s plan and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Reviewing plans or goals they are working on to apply what they are learning and deepen their discipleship to Jesus Christ.
WHO DOES THE ASSESSMENT?
EVERY STUDENT who wants to complete their Seminary course must complete at least one assessment for each half of the year; one for Seminary's Term One and another for Term Two.
WHEN ARE THE ASSESSMENTS?
There are now 2-4 scheduled for each Seminary Term in the Pacing Guide (previously it was one per Term).
WHERE DO I FIND THE ASSESSMENTS?
They are in your lesson manual amongst the lessons for the D&C Sections. The easiest way to find them is by clicking on the links in the Pacing Guide.
WHERE DO WE RECORD THAT STUDENTS HAVE COMPLETED AN ASSESSMENT?
Once a student has taken part in one of the assessment lessons, you can mark "Yes" on WISE for Assessment. It is under the "Credit" heading. Check out this video on our "Handy Tips" page (click here).
ANY TIPS?
See this link on the Church's website: "Adapting Assess Your Learning Lessons"
Enjoy the Learning Assessment. It's not a test, but a chance for meaningful discussions regarding our Saviour, our testimonies, and what we are learning.
Read the "Assess Your Learning" lesson plans carefully. Please take time to be prepared. You will all get more out of it if you do.
IF ALL MY STUDENTS HAVE COMPLETED AN ASSESSMENT FOR THE TERM, DO I STILL TEACH THE "ASSESS YOUR LEARNING" LESSONS LATER IN THE TERM?
Yes. Keep encouraging your students contemplate their knowledge and growth.
WHAT IF A STUDENT MISSES ALL OF THE ASSESSMENT LESSONS?
There is a make-up lesson pdf file for Term 1 and another for Term 2. These are below, as well as on our "Make-up Work" page on this website.
CAN STUDENTS, WHO MISSED ASSESSMENTS FOR PREVIOUS YEARS, STILL COMPLETE THEM?
Yes. They use the make-up work lessons that are on our Make-up Work page. They look different to this newer style:
The Old Testament ones are the much older style of multiple-choice questions.
The New Testament and Book of Mormon assessments are based on Doctrinal Mastery only.
The older styles will be updated over the next few years.
DO WE NEED TO KNOW THE SCORES OF THE STUDENTS?
No. We do not give scores anymore. If a student is part of the class discussion, they have completed the Assessment. If a student does it at home, the Assessment is completed once they have recorded their answers and given them to the teacher.
DO I NEED TO PRINT THE ASSESSMENTS?
Only for students who are doing it as make-up work. For these students, you can send it by email, or print it if that works better for them or you.
WHY DO ASSESSMENTS?
Assessments can help students demonstrate their spiritual knowledge, understanding, and devotion to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. These kinds of formative assessments can help students become more aware of what they are learning and how they are growing. Regular assessments can invite more personal revelation into their lives and help students create plans for future growth and learning.
