Games with (OL) beside the title means that this game is adaptable to play online (e.g. Zoom class).
Note: BINGO games don't take very long if only using some of the DM passages. See the "10-15 mins for Several DM" page for this game.
You Will Need:
A set of Banangram tiles
A Cheat Sheet
How To Play:
Students sit in a circle or around a table.
Tip all of the tiles into the middle. Give a word from one of the DM passages, e.g. "marriage". Players have to spell the word with the tiles as fast as possible.
Once someone has, they shout "bananas!" They then have to give a DM passage reference that goes with the word they spelt. E.g. D&C 49:15-17, "Marriage is ordained of God."
A Cat = a large pot lid
A Mouse = a peg with a piece of string (approx 40cm) tied securely to one end of the peg (hopefully your pegs will have a hole somewhere on it)
You Will Need:
Mice - one for everyone except the cat (e.g. if there are 5 playing you will need 4 mice
A large pot lid
All players need their scritpures
One Cheat Sheet
How To Play:
Students sit in a circle with their scriptures.
One student has the pot lid and Cheat Sheet - they are the cat.
The other students are the mice. They place the pegs in the centre of the circle so that the peg is in the very centre and the string is stretched out towards them.
The cat gives a Key Statement from those you've learnt this year. Everyone has to find it in their scriptures as fast as possible, including the cat.
Once a mouse has found the correct scripture, they tug on the tail of their mouse (the string) and pull it to safety.
Once the cat has found the correct scripture they pick up the pot lid and drop it down on any mice that are left in the centre. So if the cat is faster than the mice - they catch everyone. But if the mice are faster than the cat - they get away.
Reset the scene by placing all the mice back in the middle of the circle. Pass the Cheat Sheet to the next person in the circle so they have a chance to be the cat.
You Will Need:
One Cheat Sheet
How To Play:
Students take turns to come to the front and choose a DM scripture they want to charade from the Cheat Sheet. They can either charade the theme of the verse, or a specific word. Once the class have worked out the theme or word, they have to correctly name the DM it comes from.
This game can be played as a whole class or in small groups. If played in small groups, the players can set their own pace, or, the teacher could give a DM they have to charade and it becomes a competition between the groups.
You Will Need:
Sets of DM 2-Sided Flash Cards
How To Play:
In pairs or small groups, one person holds up one of the flash cards so the others see the Key Statement. The partner/s call out the verse it comes from as quickly as they can. Go through all the DM you've learnt so far.
Challenge: Pull out last year's flash cards. The Year 1's test the Year 2-4's.
You Will Need:
One ping pong ball or crumpled up piece of paper
One Cheat Sheet
A court - a long area, about 2m x 5m (it doesn't work in the 3m x 3m space I have in my lounge)
How To Play:
Divide the class into two groups. Define the court area to the two teams. Each team chooses one end of the court that will be their goal.
Place the ball in the centre of the court.
The teacher calls out a DM verse to the class. (The teacher can either read a DM verse and get the students to say the Key Statement. Or, the teacher can read the Key Statement and the students give the DM verse.)
Whichever team gives the correct answer back first gets send one player to the "court" (they should take turns).
This player lies on the floor and gets one blow at the ball to push it towards their goal. They should not touch the ball. They go back and join their team.
The teacher reads the next question. Play continues until one of the teams has the ball across their goal line. Play again if time.
Notes:
If the ball runs out of the side of the court, just bring it back inside to where it crossed the court line.
The crumpled up paper ball is more challenging as it doesn't roll smoothly. That can be a good and bad thing :)
If one team struggles to give the correct answer first - you can take turns at giving a question to each team rather than both teams at the same time.
You Will Need:
A whiteboard & marker for each team & one for the teacher
One Cheat Sheet
How To Play:
Place students in teams of 3-4.
The teacher writes a word from one of the DM learnt so far during the year. It will need to be something the students can draw. They also write the DM verse it cames from.
One student from each team comes to look at the word. They go back to their team, and on a whiteboard, wait for the teacher to say "go".
Upon hearing the word, they draw the word the teacher gave. Once the team guesses the correct word, they have to recall the correct DM before they can win that round.
Repeat for as much time as you want to spend on this game.
You Will Need:
Cheat Sheets
How To Play:
Put partners in pairs (or small groups). Each pair has their own Cheat Sheet.
One parter reads part of a DM verse out loud - from any of the DMs learnt that year and from anywhere in that verse. E.g. From John 3:16 they could say "that whosoever believeth in him should not perish".
The partner has to say which DM verse that is.
We have two ways of "scoring" this game:
If you get it incorrect, your player gets you to do some exercises, e.g. 2 star jumps. If you get it correct, you don't have to do any exercise. Or...
If you get it correct you still have 2 exercises to do. If you get in incorrect, you double it (e.g. 4 star jumps).
You Will Need:
A screen to play the Scripture Clips on
How To Play:
Some amazing person has compiled sets of Scripture Clips. They are short videos that relate to one of the Doctrinal Masteries. The link to these is below. The videos are available for downloading.
We enjoy watching them and them guessing which DM they relate to. I get my students to discuss with their partner before sharing their guess with the class.
Note: some of the DM have changed since these clips were done.
You Will Need:
Cheat Sheets - about one for 4 students
Spray bottles - about one for 4 students
How To Play:
A student stands in front of another student. The student standing holds the Cheat Sheet and spray bottle. They call out a Key Statement learnt that year. The student sitting down has to give the correct DM verse in 5 seconds - or they get one spray of water at their face.
If a student does not answer correctly, and get sprayed, they then get to have a turn with the Cheat Sheet and spray bottle and the standing person sits down.
I find with a larger class you can have a few bottles going around the class.
Notes:
Make sure there's only been water in the spray bottle.
The spray bottle needs to be on "spray" and not "stream", & be a light spray.
Tell the students not to hold the spray bottle too close to faces.
My new students often squeal a little bit before they realise they don't melt when they get sprayed :)
You Will Need:
A set of Double-Sided DM Cards with the verse on one side, and the Key Statement on the other side
A fly swat for each player
One Cheat Sheet
How To Play:
Depending on how many sets of cards you have, place the students in that many groups. E.g. two sets of cards = two groups.
I only give out the cards for the DM we have learnt so far. An additional challenge would be to give them all the cards.
Students sit in a circle, each with a fly swat.
The students spread the cards out in front of them so they cannot see the key statement.
One person needs to have a Cheat Sheet and be the caller. The caller reads out a key statement. The players swat the right card that goes with the key statement. The caller then gives the correct verse. Whoever got their fly swat on the right card gets to keep it as a point.
The caller continues reading out the Key Statements until all cards are gone.
Note: This was originally called Snatch. Fly swats were not used. However, this is definitely more fun and safer (less scratch injuries!)
If the students get competitive about where to hold the fly swats while waiting for the Key Statement, I suggest they hold them against their forehead.
ONLINE VERSION
You could adapt this game to something like Fastest Fingers where the students have to use the Chat feature to type in the answer as fast as possible.
You Will Need:
A whiteboard & marker for each student
How To Play:
Place students in pairs.
The teacher calls out a DM verse. Both students think of 5 key words from that verse and write them on their whiteboard (without looking at each others!)
After about 30 seconds the teacher calls "stop". Partners then see if they have any words the same. They get one point for every word which matches.
The teacher calls out as many DM verses as they have time for.
