Games with (OL) beside the title means this game is adaptable to play online (e.g. Zoom class).
You Will Need:
The DM passage for students to see (optional)
One small whiteboard and whiteboard marker for the teacher.
How To Play:
Let the students study the DM passage for 1 minute by themselves.
Put the students into small groups of 2-3.
One person from each group comes up to the teacher who is holding a small whiteboard. The teacher writes ONE word from the DM passage on the whiteboard and holds it out so only those students who come up to them can see it. The students then return and face their team.
When the teacher says “Go”, the student who saw the word starts to write out the word on the palm of their hand with their finger, holding their hand out flat like a mini-board.
The other students in their team guess what the word is. First team to guess the word correctly gets a point.
A different person in the team then has a turn - going up to the teacher and waiting for the next word to be written out.
You Will Need:
A whiteboard for each pair of students
Whiteboard marker & wiper for each pair
One Cheat Sheet for each pair
How To Play:
Let the students study the DM passage for 1 minute by themselves.
Put students in pairs.
One partner chooses a word from the passage and puts dashes on the whiteboard as you would to play Hang-man.
The other partner starts to guess the letters. The challenge is to do it without looking at the DM passage and in as few guesses as possible.
Partners then change roles.
They students may like to challenge themselves by putting two consecutive words together.
You Will Need:
One soft, small-middle sized ball
The DM passage where everyone can see it clearly (the larger the better)
How To Play:
Let the students study the DM passage for 1 minute by themselves.
All players stand in a circle, one person holding the ball. One student steps out of the circle, to the side, where they can see the DM passage.
The person standing outside the circle reads the first line of the DM passage out loud (or a couple of lines if they are short). While they are reading, the other players toss the ball quickly to each other.
Whoever is holding the ball when the person reading it says the last word of the line, they swap places. They start reading the next line of the passage while the others quickly pass the ball from person to person.
Play continues until the passage is finished. We usually go through the passage 2-3 times before finishing.
You Will Need:
Cheat Sheets - one per student
How To Play:
Put the students in pairs.
Let the students study the DM passage for a few of minutes by themselves from their Cheat Sheet.
When they’re ready – they try and say the whole passage to their partner.
Notes:
This is best done with smaller passages.
You may like to offer a ‘reward’ if they complete it (my class is allowed something from the lolly jar).
You Will Need:
A whiteboard for each pair of students
Whiteboard marker & wiper for each pair
One Cheat Sheet for each pair
How To Play:
Let the students study the DM passage for 1 minute by themselves.
One partner holds the whiteboard. The other partner holds the Cheat Sheet and reads out 4-5 consecutive words of the DM verse you are learning this week. Their partner must give the word that would come next. If they give the correct word, they get to mark a noughts and crosses grid. They then swap the whiteboard and Cheat Sheet so the other partner has a turn.
You Will Need:
An A4 sized whiteboard for each pair of students (or A4 paper & pens).
Whiteboard markers
A die for each pair of players
The DM passage where everyone can see it clearly
How To Play:
Let the students study the DM passage for 1 minute by themselves.
Pairs of students then sit together with one whiteboard, marker, and die between them. One student has the die. The other has the whiteboard and marker.
When ready to start, the person with the whiteboard starts writing down the passage, word for word, as fast as possible. The person with the die rolls it, again and again, until the get a 6. They shout “six”.
Rolls are then reversed. The other person has to continue on writing the DM where the first person left off. Once their partner shouts “six”, roles are again reversed.
The aim is to be the person who writes the LAST word of the DM on the whiteboard.
If playing online, both students will need to write out the verse rather than swapping the whiteboard.
You Will Need:
The DM passage for students to see
A timer (optional)
How To Play:
Let the students study the DM passage for 1 minute by themselves.
In pairs, the students say the DM passage to their partner as fast as they can. The partner can time them (if wanted).
The challenge is to go fast AND correctly – it’s quite a challenge!
You Will Need:
One soft, small-middle sized ball
The DM passage where everyone can see it clearly (the larger the better)
How To Play:
Everyone stands in a circle. The person holding the ball says the first word of the verse. They then toss it to another person.
That person then says the next word of the passage, and then tosses it to another player. You can’t pass it back to the person who tossed it to you.
Play continues like this until they get to the end of the passage.
Optional Rule: IF someone drops the ball, they must start from the beginning of the passage rather than continuing on.
If the team finishes in time, everyone in the circle takes a large step backwards to make it bigger and tries again.
Note: For large classes you might like to make two circles.
You Will Need:
A whiteboard for each pair of students
Whiteboard marker & wiper for each pair
One Cheat Sheet for each pair
How To Play:
Let the students study the DM passage for 1 minute by themselves.
Put students in pairs.
One partner, using the Cheat Sheet, chooses a word from the passage and writes it on the board, mixing up the order of the letters.
The other partner must guess the word. They then swap roles.
The students may like to challenge themselves by mixing two shorter words together (making sure they’re consecutive words).
You Will Need:
A whiteboard or piece of paper for each student or pair
Whiteboard marker or pen/pencil.
One Cheat Sheet for each pair
How To Play:
Let the students study the DM passage for 1 minute by themselves.
Decide if you want to play individually or in pairs.
Students write out the whole passage. They check their work with the Cheat Sheet.
You Will Need:
An A4 sized whiteboard for each pair of students. (Alternatively, paper, pencils & erasers.)
Whiteboard markers
Whiteboard wipers
How To Play:
Before class, write out the entire DM passage on a small whiteboard. You will need one whiteboard for each pair of students. (If you have no whiteboards, use paper and pencils.)
Let the students study the DM passage for 1 minute by themselves.
Partners take turns wiping out one word at a time (while their partner isn’t looking). They draw a line where the word is missing.
They then hand the whiteboard to their partner. The partner has to say what word has been wiped out.
Partners then swap roles, taking turns at being the wiper or the guesser. Keep playing until time is up or they have erased the whole verse.
