Most female students and staff members get their period every month, yet little is being done to aid those who menstruate. Periods can be unpredictable; they can stop for weeks, decide to not show up, or come earlier than expected. Not everyone is prepared when they get theirs.
While the bathrooms in our school do provide tampons and pads, the free products are rough, uncomfortable, and not suitable for everyone’s body type. The pads are one size labeled “MaxiThin.” The tampons are one size as well and don’t expand in the right way to prevent leakage. For people who leak, the nurse doesn’t provide spare underwear or pants. The few free product machines tend to run empty and the products are bad quality.
That’s where we’d like to come in.
At the moment, you can buy a pack of pads at a grocery store for around ten dollars and a pack of tampons for around eight dollars. We’d like to donate as many products as possible so that we can provide little bins in each women's and gender neutral bathroom. That way, people won’t have to worry about not having the products they need when they happen to need them.

But, as we mentioned before, this does come with a price. One way we plan to gather products is by organizing a period product drive. To make sure everyone has what they need, we will be setting up a table in the main hallway to gather tampon and pad donations of all sizes, new underwear of all sizes, new or lightly used pants of all sizes, and cash donations.
The tampons and pads will be separated evenly among each of the bathrooms and underwear and pants will be kept in the nurse's office if anyone needs them.
So far we’ve gained amazing support from school administrators and other students, and we hope that we will be able to continue supporting students with periods at Nyack High School.
