Our End of the Spectrum
I’m sure everyone is tired of hearing about the ways COVID is changing nearly every aspect of our lives, but one thing Nyack isn’t willing to let go of is our annual Hallway Decorating, a way to spark a sense of unity, along with some competition, across every grade. Each grade’s elected student council picks a winter theme and gets one afternoon to turn their assigned school hallway into a winter wonderland, if you will. From Aloha-holiday to Polar Express to The Grinch, we have seen some great themes throughout the years. Unfortunately, it won’t be possible for us to decorate all together in school this year, but the student government has come up with some great ways to keep the holiday spirit alive.
The first is an at-home version of Hallway Decorating that anyone and everyone can participate in. Whether you want to decorate a door, a pet, or even a whole house, the choice is yours! The competition is more fierce than ever before. Instead of whole grades competing, it is every student for themselves. Everyone who chooses to decorate will submit a photo of their creation and after they’re all in, there will be a vote to determine the best of the best, which will be featured in the next issue.
As all of us are enrolled in “Zoom University” one way or another, the winter holiday spirit is being extended there as well. If decorating doors isn’t your thing, students from each grade can create a festive design for a Zoom background or profile picture. Once the creations are submitted, they will be released to their corresponding grade and all the students will have the opportunity to cast their vote for which is their favorite. Freshmen will vote on the freshmen candidates, sophomores on the sophomore picks, etc. After the vote is finished, the images will be officially posted for each grade to have a unique design that can be used for Zoom customization.
Even though we may not be celebrating the holidays as we hoped, we can still make the most of everything we do have. We should all try to be thankful for what’s important to us and to always enjoy the company of our loved ones. In the meantime, stay on the lookout for a Schoology announcement about where to submit your amazing photos and designs. Happy Holidays Nyack!
