The process of strategic planning encompasses strategy development, strategy implementation, and the measurement of progress towards objectives. By completing this module NPHIs will gain support in the strategy development process and identify initial steps for strategic plan implementation. No assumptions are made as to whether or not the NPHI has conducted any strategic planning to date, but it is presumed that by agreeing to undertake this module, NPHIs are ready to undertake the strategic planning process and will identify a group of NPHI staff responsible for overseeing module progress.

The module begins with an initial assessment of where NPHIs are in the strategic planning process. Facilitators then select from a suite of tools and activities tailored to the status of an NPHIs strategic planning process and their specific asks.
Clear mission, vision, and values are central to organizational success. During step 2, facilitators help participants reflect on what mission, vision, and values are and then draft/review the NPHIs mission, vision, and core values. This is followed by conducting a SWOT analysis to better understand the internal and external context in which the NPHI operates.
This step includes conducting a SWOT analysis to better understand the internal and external context in which the NPHI operates.
Goals are broad statements that are consistent with and built from the mission. Strategic objectives are high-level objectives that help provide strategic focus. In step 3, NPHIs review what goals and strategic objectives are and then review OR draft new goals and strategic objectives.
This is an overview of monitoring and evaluation. During this session participants discuss the need for monitoring and evaluation of the strategic plan and some tools and techniques for monitoring and evaluation are introduced.
After completing steps 1 through 4, NPHIs will have drafts of several components of their strategic plan. The last step is designed as an NPHI-led discussion to outline clear next steps for strategic plan development. At the end of the strategic plan workshop, NPHIs will also complete a postworkshop checklist.
