Over 70% of change initiatives, from implementing new technology to establishing a new institute/organization, fail.1 Some reasons for failure can include staff resistance, lack of change leadership, not effectively communicating the change or urgency for change, change timing, or lack of resources. Leaders and executives are expected to drive large scale transformational change within their organizations with little understanding of change science or preparation. This module will provide guidance for NPHI leadership to develop a clear vision for change and strategy to execute the change within the NPHI.
Enable NPHIs to effectively manage organizational change processes by introducing them to change concepts and techniques to minimize barriers and accomplish change visions.
Introduce key change terms, concepts, and principles to enable NPHIs to develop a change package.
Provide guidance to assess the NPHI change climate, readiness for change, and modifiable barriers to strategic plan implementation.
Utilize the science of change management, including change frameworks and tools, to identify a focus area for change management and develop a change management plan.
John Kotter’s eight stage process for creating transformational change is one of the most widely recognized change management models.1 Kotter studied over 100 cases of change to understand what people do to successfully enact change in a turbulent environment. The figure provides an example of how the framework operates to effect change.
