Description: Retention of the installation of a pergola at a Non-Contributing rated, two-story, single-family residential building without a Certificate of Appropriateness.
HDLC Guidelines:
Section 10, Page 10 of the Guidelines for Site Elements
Retention Items:
Pergola: Approval with the proviso that any and all future exterior work must be reviewed and approved by the HDLC prior to install.
Staff Recommendations:
2738 Saint Charles Avenue is a non-contributing building, constructed sometime after 1950 likely in the mid to late 1970s, based on the fire insurance map.
According to HDLC guidelines, landscape features such as gazebos, pergolas, fountains etc. are encouraged to be located in rear yards to minimize visibility from the public right-of-way. The proposed pergola is simple in design, and its location falls within the HDLC guidelines. However, due to the property's location, a portion of the rear yard is highly visible from Washington Avenue. The pergola design is consistent with what would typically be approved at the staff level if a permit had been submitted. Staff recommends approval, with the proviso that any and all future exterior work must be reviewed and approved by the HDLC prior to install.
Recommendation: Approval with the proviso that any and all future exterior work must be reviewed and approved by the HDLC prior to install.
Case History:
September 2025: The applicant submitted a Renovation (Structural) permit seeking after-the-fact approval of the existing pergola.
September 2024: The applicant submitted a Renovation (Non-Structural) permit for general exterior and interior renovations to the house. The scope of work did not include the pergola.
