What are Lake Erie PP/K's?

This PP/K is found in the United States of America within the northeast region. These projectile points are found in the Ohio Valley region, though more commonly found in the Great Lake region. These projectile points can be found most Eastward in Southwest New York and Pennsylvania. On the other hand, the most South that these projectile points can be found in Kentucky, or even Tennessee.

Properties

These projectile points have a very unique shape, similar to that of shark teeth. These projectile points are fairly small, being the total length of about one inch. However, they can be bigger or smaller, like many PP/K’s the size is ranged. While the blade is primarily straight, the shoulders of the projectile point can range from horizontal to being curved upward. Generally speaking, the stem is straight. The base, however, is bifurcated, meaning that it is branched off in two different directions, with lobes that are parallel to each other. PP/K’s have a wide variety of flaking patterns, but the Lake Erie PP/K has a random pattern. Like many projectile points, the Lake Erie style was utilized in multiple different material types.

Who Discovered Lake Erie PP/K's?

This PP/K was named by Olaf Prufer and Charles Sofsky in 1965. It was originally found at the McKibben Site in Trumbull County, Ohio. Though it may be obvious, the name was given to this PP/K based on Lake Erie.

These archaeologists established that this type of projectile point was created from 8,300 to 7,800 B.P. (Before the Present). This would place this projectile point within the cultural period known as the "Early Archaic" to "Middle Archaic" period. The Archaic Period, broken up into the early, middle, and late periods, is a common way in which North American archaeologists determine the cultural significance of various artifacts.
