What is Bare Island?

  • Bare Island is a term dedicated to the specific type of projectile point found in many areas of the North-East from as South as Maryland to as far North as Vermont.

  • Consisting of a curved haft leading into a narrow triangular shape, this point leads into a narrow point.

  • This type of point was made from the Late Archaic to the Early Woodland period, which was around the year 1000 B.C.

Other Information

  • The most common varieties of material that this point is made out of is argillite, quartz, quartzite, rhyolite, alongside other common rocks and minerals found in this area.

  • The average length of these points range around 55mm overall, with the blade itself averaging around 15 mm.

  • Although similar to other semi-large points, as these points chip or otherwise break their size allows them to be further crafted into smaller and smaller sizes so as to not waste an entire piece.
