The late Robert Enlow lived in New Providence with wife Barbara, from 1951 to 2003, and considered himself a self-taught artist. He retired in1982, after 16 years as circulation manager of the Wall Street Journal. He said he began painting “seriously” at a time when he was between jobs. He had left his prior position as marketing manager for the International Division of Ford Motor Company, rather than move to Chicago, he said; and turned to his paints and brushes to keep from going crazy. But he had begun painting long before that.
Born in Maryland, he had started drawing and painting at age 8, a year after his family moved to East Orange, NJ. A 1940 graduate of Rutgers University, where he received a bachelor of science degree in business administration. He was in the Air Force during World War II, serving in Central and South America as a special agent of the War Department in the Counter Intelligence Corps.
He continued to travel, in civilian life, with the job with Ford entailing extensive travel. Wherever he went he took pictures, some of which became the basis of some of his later paintings.
Enlow created a collection called “Windows Into the Past- Historic New Providence”, which was inspired by the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of New Providence, in 1999. Some of these painting of historic buildings in town remain in the society’s collection. Bob was a member and officer of the historical society, in the 1990’s.
