Nakkertok Nordic is the largest cross-country ski club in Canada and is located 25 minutes outside of downtown Ottawa. It boasts an extended season artificial snow loop that gives athletes access to on snow training as early as November. Nakkertok is home to numerous FIS-homologated race courses which host national-level events annually. Nakkertok regularly hosts an East Canada Cup (Candy Cane Cup), the Canadian Eastern Championships, and hosted Canadian Nationals for the first time in 2019. Nakkertok is a popular location for intensity workouts during the winter months.
Gatineau Park is home to 40 kilometers of parkway, which are closed to cars and frequently used for roller ski workouts and races during the off-season. The park also includes hundreds of kilometers of trail running, mountain biking and cross-country skiing. Gatineau Park is a key training location during the off-season and is often used for distance workouts in the winter. The park also hosts several races during the ski season, including the Gatineau Loppet and Coupe Skinouk.
Carleton University and the University of Ottawa are both home to high performance centers where our athletes complete their strength training through their respective university nordic ski teams. Athletes who are part of the Ravens or Gee Gees varsity program have access to strength coaching and strength sessions twice a week.
When commuting across the river to training is not an option, the city of Ottawa is home to several urban trail networks. We are lucky to have access to ski trails at Ski Heritage East, the Kichi Sibi Trail, Mooneys Bay, the Ottawa West Winter Trail, the Rideau Winter Trail and the Britannia Winter Trail.
Before the snow falls, the city of Ottawa is home to several of our trainining locations. We reguarily run running and ski bounding intensity sessions or rollerski technique sessions at the Dominum Arboretum, Mooney's Bay and Vincent Massey Park. We also frequent the extensive network of bike paths throughout the city.
Our entire team combines their athletic pursuits with academic pursuits. The majority of the team studies part-time or full-time at either the University of Ottawa or Carleton University. Balance has been identified as a key priority on our team, training can be adjusted to accommodate academic goals and our program will work with universities to provide accommodations during the race season. Additionally, scholarship money may be available for athletes performing at a high level while skiing for a university program.
We are lucky to have both the Carleton University Nordic Ski Team and uOttawa Nordiq as training partners in our region. Many of our athletes are part of one of these programs in addition to ENRG. We meet with both teams every Tuesday morning during the school year to perform collaborative group workouts.
ENRG is supported by our club, Nakkertok Nordic. We regularily participate in club events, such as club workouts, fundraisers and races. ENRG also organizes two fundraiser events a year in the region, the Boxing Day Burn-Off and ENRG Ski Fest (the Nakkertok Enduro + the Stadium Sprint Championships of the Universe). Additonally, ENRG athletes collaborate with the Nakkertok Junior Racing Program through education sessions, athlete presentations and often through coaching positions. We are proud to be part of such a vibrant ski community.
