Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals

Holy Baptism

Baptism is a sign of belonging to Jesus and beginning a journey of faith with him. It is a public celebration of the love of God for all, expressed in the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. An older child, young person or adult can understand and accept this love for themselves. When a baby is baptized, the child is held within the faith of others - of their parents, their godparents and the community of the church. The celebration takes place as part of Sunday worship and is always a cause for great joy!

Sometimes parents wish to give thanks to God for the birth of their child but feel Baptism is not appropriate for them. In this case we are delighted to arrange an Act of Thanksgiving, and to commit ourselves as church to support and encourage you in your family life.

If you would like to talk more about Baptism or an Act of Thanksgiving, please get in touch with Deborah.

Weddings

Getting married in a Christian context involves an act of worship at which a legal and solemn contract is made between two people before God. It is also of course, a wonderful celebration of love and shared life, witnessed by family and friends.

At Nailsea Methodist Church, our authorisation includes the marriage of same sex as well as opposite gender couples.

Our flexible worship hall and community facilities provide plenty of options for creating the ceremony of your choice.

Deborah will meet with you over several sessions to talk about marriage and to plan the service with you.

We are also delighted to offer services of blessing for couples who are already married.

Please get in touch if you’d like to know more.

Funerals

From love we came and to love we return. Christians believe that the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ give them hope and cause for thanksgiving in the face of death. In this faith, we entrust those who have died to the never-ending love of God.

When a loved one dies, some families choose to have a short service and committal at the crematorium or cemetery first and if they desire, a service of thanksgiving at the church. Others choose a funeral service at church followed by the committal at the crematorium or cemetery.

Deborah has a close working relationship with local funeral directors. Please do not hesitate to contact her if you need some help at this difficult time.

Candles of Remembrance

Each November on the Sunday afternoon closest to All Saints, we hold a service for those who have been bereaved. In reflective worship we remember loved ones and draw strength from the prayerful support of others. Refreshments are served afterwards.
