Wooden Signs

Model Railway Sign

One of my first laser projects was a set of signs for a model railway.

It took a number of goes to make sure the soot stayed where I burned the wood and not all over the sign. I used for this project 3mm ply.
I cut only halfway through the ply and I used a fret saw to release the signs.

Laser sign

Again a bit trial and error...  This sign was made to warn members of the household that the laser is running .

To create enough contrast I sprayed a single layer of white paint on the surface, so you still can see the wood grain. To ensure that I didn't smudge the surface I put a layer of painters tape on the side to be lasered.
I also found (as you can see in the top), that it is not a good idea to use a brush for applying varnish immediately after the painters' tape is taken off. It worked better after switching to a spray for the first layer of varnish, which fixated everything....

Every hive has a number..

I was asked if I could design and make some signs to number the beehives of my neighbour.  This was easier said then done (for an amateur!).
The main difficulty was to get the power/speed settings right for each picture, so to get enough contrast, but without making it too black. For this I used some scrap pieces of wood and tested the settings, until I was satisfied enough. An the right you see one of the many test pieces

Magnetic Clothes pegs

Pegs to hang on the fridge or any metal object, to keep those important documents organised. A good object for some personalisation, so please contact me if you would like to discuss the option!
