Metropolis Metamorphosis: Oceanside's Gentrification in Hyperlapse

Riley Golden

My project utilizes hyper-lapse photography to explore the gentrification of Oceanside, capturing the rapid changes in its urban landscape. By employing time-lapse techniques, I aim to visually narrate the transformation, juxtaposing old and new, highlighting the evolving socio-economic fabric through architectural shifts and community dynamics. Grounded in ongoing research on urban development and community displacement, this project seeks to provoke reflection on the social and cultural impacts of gentrification through the unique perspective of hyper-lapse photography.

About the Artist

My artistic practice spans a diverse spectrum, encompassing a multitude of subjects that have captured my creative lens over the years—ranging from landscapes to action sports and lifestyle photography. The camera serves as my conduit to any subject that unfolds before it, inviting exploration and interpretation. However, my deep affinity lies within the realm of landscape photography, where I perceive an inherent significance in capturing the essence of a place, whether it's through the passage of time or a fleeting moment frozen in eternity.

I find profound fulfillment in preserving moments that evoke emotions or resonate with relatability. Influenced by esteemed artists like Chris Burkard, Jimmy Chin, Clark Little, The New Topographics group, and Edward Muybridge—visionaries renowned for their captivating landscape artistry—I draw inspiration from their ability to reveal unseen corners of our world. Burkard and Chin, both directors and remarkable landscape photographers, particularly inspire me with their ability to showcase the extraordinary.

My work predominantly materializes into large-scale inkjet prints, offering unique perspectives on landscapes. However, I also find creative expression in exploring video and multimedia. My creative process often ignites during moments of street photography or amidst the backdrop of a planned road trip. It's in these moments that ideas flourish, shaping my content creation.

My focus gravitates towards documenting national parks and the intrinsic beauty of their flora and fauna. I aim to engage with an audience deeply connected to nature, seeking resonance with individuals who possess a shared love for the outdoors, regardless of age. For me, the ultimate goal is to establish meaningful connections through my photography, rooted in a mutual appreciation for the natural world.

In my artistic pursuit, I endeavor to present a personal perspective on transient societal and natural moments, weaving together a narrative that transcends time. Whether it's an introspective commentary on societal issues or a visually striking landscape, my craftsmanship is imbued with an appreciation for the privilege of bearing witness and documenting these fleeting yet profound moments.
