Puro Pochote

Alondra Osuna

In this project I combine archival photography and family narratives to not only help preserve personal history, but to argue that the knowledge of our past can help “nurture” our present and help us advance towards the future. The fusion of these two serves as a purpose: to preserve the rich tapestry of personal history and advocating that the profound belief that our understanding of the past acts as a nourishing force for that of the present, driving us forward purposefully into an aware future. I hope that my work can become a testament to the continuum of our shared stories and cherished memories.

The materials I am using in my creative process are archival photographs, cyanotypes, wood, and servilletas de tortillas [domestic textiles used to keep food items like tortillas warm]. With these materials I am creating a recollection of memories, both past and present, from what is gained at childhood to the loss of a loved one.

Big thank you to my Mama Lupe, my brother and dad for helping me along the way with this piece.

About the Artist

In my work as a multimedia artist – working primarily with Photography, Graphic Design, Installation, Sculpture, and Videography – I seek to understand the value of family and knowing where one comes from.

These elements are important to my practice, since I often undertake my work as a sort of homage to my family, allowing people a window into my life and the lives of those who are often unseen.

In my practice, I draw inspiration from artists like Arlene Mejorado and Felix Gonzales Torres, and use typical everyday materials drawn from the realm of the domestic.

Through this work, I wish to challenge myself to create something that can bring forth the past into the present, to push forms and narratives forward.
