Spaces Between

Alexis Mejia

Spaces Between is a video story which expresses my vulnerabilities and experiences with isolation and communication as it depicts the internal and intrapersonal issues that exist within social interactions. To create a stage for discussion, this piece aims to create a sense of familiarity with the subject of isolation and perseverance in order to dismantle the negative stigma that comes with talking about them. Using a form of narrative and experimental video and a usage of personal and free use video, this piece actively aims to create a form of comfort through a cinematic and dreamlike lens. Ultimately, Spaces Between acts as a catalyst for the discussion of negative self-image, lack of trust, and feelings of isolation common among the teens and adults.

About the Artist

My work primarily explores themes of imagination, human interaction, and self-identity through pieces that can resonate with others and address sensitive topics that are difficult but important to discuss. In my practice, I often find that I gravitate to family and memory for inspiration. As a child, I didn’t worry about food or housing, I lived in a bubble of joy, that sadly burst in 2008 during the housing crisis in which my parents where forced to sell our house. Although a sad moment it gave me the push I needed to find myself and dive into my artistic practice.

The primary mediums I work with are abstract and narrative video, photography, and figurative sculpture. In particular, I hope my work resonates with individuals who identify as introverts, who find themselves secluded and guarded: acting as a platform to foster connection through conversation and reflection.
