Failure: A Love Story by Philip Dawkins explores the journeys of the 3 Fail sisters before their deaths in 1928, dying in order from youngest to oldest. In their experiences with sisterhood, love, and grief, the magical narration of their lives and deaths proves that in the end, love outweighs any individual’s successes or failures.
My directorial vision for Failure involved lots of ensemble work and elevating the magical realism of the text with design elements. The clocks each had their own masks hand-painted to match the clock they carried with them. The animals-- Mae, December, & Moses-- all had puppets in addition to the actors having aspects of the animalss in their costuming and makeup. In addition, as each Fail family member passed on, each one was given a lily, symbolizing the love that remains. As each female family member passed on, they also took on the role of the gramophone, haunting the narrative of the Fail family story with their melodies.
