Big Fish, based on the novel by Daniel Wallace, tells the tale of Edward Bloom between two timelines. In the present-day real world, sixty-year-old Edward Bloom faces his mortality while his son, Will, prepares to become a father himself. In the fantastical storybook past, Will watches Edward become the myth himself as a teenager, encountering a witch, a giant, a mermaid, and finally meeting the love of his life, Sandra.
Since there are such creative liberties that can be taken with the fantastical nature of Big Fish, a lot of my work as an Assistant Director was in helping in conversations in solidifying the driving vision for the show, especially in conversation with designers. My responsibilities included taking attendance at each rehearsal, taking down blocking, leading rehearsals for ensemble numbers, distributing notes, and communicating technical needs with the rest of the production team. I additionally collaborated with our produciton team to create a short medley of the show for a performance at the John Raitt Awards for Youth.
