Digital Project Delivery
Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering ● Michigan Technological University
Bo Xiao, Ph.D.
Bo Xiao, Ph.D.
The goal of this class is to familiarize students with the transformative role of civil integrated management and building information models (CIM/BIM) in the construction industry. Classwork will involve developing design requirements and specifications based on stakeholder needs, and delivering 3D/4D models that can support contract documents, using industry standard software applications such as Civil3D, Autodesk Revit and Navisworks. Throughout this process, students will be introduced to fundamental BIM theory, information management, visualization, smart sensing and tracking, and other advanced topics in the context of digital project delivery.

● BIM theories:
Applying principles of Design Thinking to establish project requirements and relate them to the design process of a residential project.
Developing simple building information models and understanding their role in the facility life cycle (Revit).
Use techniques such as clash detection and 4D CAD in project management (Navisworks).
Visualizing and developing survey land data, and conducting simple design calculations using (Civil 3D).
Learning basic BIM theories including parametric modeling, BIM platforms, BIM for architects, owners, contractors, facility managers, and engineers.
There is no "homework" and final exams - this is a project-based class requiring teamwork. Class time is divided into lecture and lab sessions. Students are highly recommended to bring their own laptops to the lab session in order to complete lab exercises. There are no “right answers” to the problems. Self-motivated creative thinking, working in teams and solution design are encouraged. You will be graded on your abilities as follows:
