The basement of the MUB has evolved as the needs of the students of Michigan Tech have evolved. Fulfilling its original purpose in 1952, a bowling alley was created in the MUB as an auxiliary space for students to collaborate. As the student body grew, the bowling alley of the MUB was converted into the Makerspace, where students have access to tools and other materials necessary to build projects.
The main use of the area today is the Makerspace. Students gather in this area daily to work on either class projects or their own personal creations. There is one meeting room adjacent to the Makerspace, as well as multiple side spaces that are used as mechanical rooms for the university.
Open the Makerspace up to be able to give students more room to work.
We removed the {enter in which direction} wall in the Makerspace improved the space for equipment and overall accessibility. The meeting room that is between the stairs and the Makerspace was converted into a room where the employees of the Makerspace can monitor student activity, keep important documents, and conduct repairs. Additionally, the current space where employees are stationed was removed, opening up more space in the room and allowing an opening to be made between the current meeting room and the Makerspace.
