Advice to share to juniors:
One the things we ought to be told when we are growing up is that, everybody does
life at their own pace. It is okay if you have yet to figure out what is best for you.
You may grow up appreciating societal norms but you should never feel pressured
by the ideologies of what a “successful life” should look like. You are the driver in
this journey where there is no one fixed recipe to doing life.
If I could write a note to the me when I was your age, I would tell myself the same
things that I am about to tell you here.
The thought of the future and its uncertainties may be unnerving. There are so
many things that you may be losing sleep over; your grades, your goals, your
passion, your relationships or your insecurities over the physical changes your body
is going through. There may be days when your self-doubt gets the better of you.
There may be times when you may get disheartened. Whatever it is that you’re
going through right now or may go through in the future, however challenging or
overwhelming they are or may seem to be, always remember this one thing; that is,
to be kind to yourself. It never hurts to pause, take a breather from it and do
something that heals your mind and body before getting back on track. If nobody
has told you this yet, you are a smart and worthy person, and, you are definitely
more capable than you perceive yourself to be. Never be too hard on yourself and
trust me when I say, you will get through them.
You will soon learn that you are not defined by your past, how well you do
academically in school or how impressive of a career you have. Instead, you will
leave more of a meaningful impact on the people around you with your open mind,
positive attitude, respect for others, compassion, humility and for giving your best
genuine efforts with others and in all that you do.
Be confident that you will achieve great things in life. Seize every opportunities, be
courageous to challenge even if it means you need to step out of your comfort
zone, pursue your passions but above all, be present, have fun, enjoy every
beautiful moment your journey in life brings you and be proud of the young
individual you will grow to become.
Best of luck in all of your endeavours – the best is yet to come.
Please do not shy away from asking your career teachers to connect us if you wish
to have a casual chat over the serious (how did a government scholar pursuing to
do criminal prosecution land a commercial/corporate lawyer job (and loving it
too!)?) or the casuals (how do I balance my career with my passions?).
