FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL: This is great for the first day of school, or anytime you need to teach about differences. As my favorite quote goes, ... they call you weird and dumb and crazy until you succeed. Then they call you 'genius.' Buy it at amazon or, even better, at Bulk Books!
On a Beam of Light: This is a story of a little boy would grew up to Albert Einstein. As a kid, he was just Albert and he was very, very different. It's a nice message for kids to start the year. Show it at the beginning of the year and then buy the copy from Scholastic books and keep it in your classroom library!

Yeh-Shen is the original Cinderella story. It shows us how grace and beauty will always win out over jealousy and scorn... and it is perfect when you start talking about Chinese New Year in February or Asian-History month (in May).
February is Black History month. The first video is the origin story of one of the greatest scientists no one has ever heard of: Benjamin Banneker. That dude designed Washington D.C. and was pivtoal in helping our nation develop the way it did.
The second video is about Bass Reeves, an American law enforcement officer. He worked mostly in Arkansas and the Oklahoma Territory about 100 years after Benjamin lived in the colonies. Seriously, these are two amazing human beings and kids need to know these adventure stories. Life ain't what you think it is, kids. Ask Bass and Benjamin, right?
INVICTUS Games: The Invictus Games are an annual thing in the UK, all thanks to this poem and William Ernest Henley. Every Spring, the UK and the crown celebrates these people with these games.
There is a great youcubed activity for March 14. Click here for fub math themed work!
MOTHER'S DAY: "A Mom for Umande" is a great story for Mother's Day. The child in question is a little gorilla. She has a biological mother, who could not take care of her, has an adoptive mom, but lots of other mom-people along the way. This is the perfect mother's day video because it address all sorts of mothers and all sorts of mothering.
Butterfly Craft for Mother's day: Myster Science has a great science lesson to go with it, but I like making the card with the butterfly flutters out when you open the card! Here are the card on how to make the card. English and Spanish.
This is a great story for teaching a lot of literary elements. For example, character motivation or theme. Each character has a very different motivation for their actions. You can also have a conversation about loyalty versus ethics. Should Jimmy have done what he did? If you want to talk about the theme of "Loyalty" you can ask: Who was Jimmy more loyal to? Who is Bob more loyal to? Who is the better friend? Who is the better citizen? Each character was motivated by something very different, which reflects on their attitudes of loyalty. All around, O.Henry never disappoints, does he?
"The Weaving Contest" is a famous story from Ancient Greece about how spiders came to be... and how to never, ever, ever make Minerva mad!
