Keynote Lessons:
These are the lessons to accompany the journal. The slideshows are formatted for Keynote, the slideshow app that comes with Mac. If you can download it, then open using Keynote, you got a fully engaging lesson done and done!
I do have one slide, before each presentation, called "Before teaching." It's just kinda my own notes about what the kids need, like a copy of Paper 1 or a whiteboard....
Brenner Tip 1: The Animations
Look, I am all about the animations and the pacing during my lessons. So, try out the slideshow first, before you are in front of your class, and you will see my strategically placed animations on each slide.
Brenner Tip 2: The Worksheet
When you do the lesson with the class, make sure every student has the word document in their hand. (It is formatted as a PDF.) This way, they can go along with the slides... it's all about engagement, right? I create these lessons for the maximum student engagement, getting each kid to be able to produce a good three-paragraph reading response.
Lesson 1: Keynote What is "Maslow's Hierarchy?"
Lesson 2: Keynote How to use textual evidence.
Lesson 2: How to use Textual Evidence
(If I am following the Engage New York units, I skipped lesson 3.)
Lesson 5: Character Analysis Part 1
Bud, not Buddy Resources
Here is a quick bulletin board to put up.
This journal is based off of the Engage New York lessons so you get figurative language, theme, reading response... A whole ELA unit! Also, I use the Icons of Depth & Complexity for those Gifted Kids. Also, because at our school we use PBL, so this is part of a larger project, so you get all the references to Maslow's Hierarchy... That sounds like a lot of higher order thinking... but guess what? ALL kids can do higher order thinking... The beauty of this journal is you can print it, and remove pages you don't need or teach one page per week like worksheets... Your call!
These are the songs mentioned in the novel.
Song: Spare a Dime
Song: Shenandoah (melody and lovely imagery)
Song: Shenandoah (with lyrics as Bruce Springsteen sings it!) (and here is when our very own Ms. Skiff sang it with her high school choir and once more when the Long Johns did it a cappella..
The Historical Time: 1930's
