Just a note:
The pages with black ink are the "middle group," your regular fifth grade readers.
The pages with green ink are the California power standards, specifically using multiple sources of information, integrating knowledge.
At the end, there is a teacher's guide, mostly in red ink.
So, print the journal, remove the pages you don't want to use and get to teaching!

Integrating Knowledge
One of the big 5th Grade California power standards is RI 5.9, Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably. So, I did this with those green pages.
The first set of green pages is using multiple sources of information to figure our Paul Revere's motivation for making an inaccurate etching of the Boston Massacre (hello, primary sources).
I suggest reading your class textbook, doing some on-line research, watching some videos before reading what this novel has to say.
The second set of green pages is analyzing the actions of men at Fort Ticonderoga to see if their actions were ethical.
The third set of green pages is using multiple sources of information to determine if Benedict Arnold is a misunderstood hero or a villain just waiting in the wings.
