Talking about rhythm, certain technical terms are often confused: pulse, meter and rhythm. Some of these musical phenomena can seem very similar, or in some instances actually sound the same, but they need to be differentiated:
Pulse (also: beat or tempo): continuous identical, even, unemphasized beats (1234)
Meter: regularly recurring pattern of emphasized (accentuated) and unemphasized (unaccentuated) beats (1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4)
Rhythm: succession of (usually) differently long tones (accentuated and/or unaccentuated)
