Misidentification - see also Lecania cyrtella (#139A) and Polyozosia sambuci (#139B). At first I sectioned apothecia on the side of the bark sample, careful not to disturb the main growth and keyed it out to Lecania cyrtella. I thought I was dealing with young, not fully developed apothecia.
I had doubts because the thalline margin was all too prominent. Re-sectioning of larger apothecia from the sample led me to P. sambuci .
Take away: use typical apothecia/structures for identification even if it disturbs the sample - thats why you took the sample in the first place.
Crustose lichen with white thallus on smooth bark of young poplar. In the red circle are 2 apothecia which I mistook for belonging to the lichen I wanted to identifiy.
Red arrowhead: Apothecia sectioned in the 1st attempt (139A, Lecania cyrtella).
Blue arrowhead: Apothecia sectioned in the 2nd attempt (139B, Polyozosia sambuci)
