The Milpitas High School NJROTC program, originally established in 1977 at Samuel Ayer High School, transitioned to Milpitas High following Ayer's closure. It has since become a cornerstone of student leadership and service, offering Naval Science courses that count toward graduation while teaching cadets about citizenship, naval history, oceanography, leadership, and discipline. Cadets wear uniforms weekly and engage in structured training and team competitions, including Color Guard, Armed and Unarmed Drill, Orienteering, Physical Training, and Academic Teams. The unit hosts its own annual drill meet, “Legions of Troy,” and emphasizes community service and personal development. Leadership in recent years has included Lt. Margie Jackson, USCG (Ret.), who restructured the program for improved accountability and mentorship. Despite facing enrollment challenges that risk Navy funding, the program remains active and resilient, implementing outreach like summer camps, school visits, and public visibility efforts. Cadets benefit significantly from the experience, gaining confidence, leadership skills, and preparation for college and careers. With improved Annual Military Inspection performance and ongoing recruitment, the NJROTC program continues to serve as a powerful influence on the students of Milpitas High School.Â
