French I is a sequential course which stresses communication in the target language. The student will be exposed to listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills with the ultimate goal of being able to function at a basic level in the target language. Note: We believe that successful completion of English and/or foreign language in the preceding school year is an essential foundation for those electing this course.

French I Honors

French II Honors

French III

French IV (EEP)

Full Year

French IV offers further refinement of the four skills. Students read works by French-speaking authors from a variety of literary periods, increasing their sense of community not only geographically but also temporally. Videos and native speaker recordings on many subjects motivate students to improve their communication skills. Students write formally and informally on a regular basis. In class, they will continue creative use of the language with role-playing, pairing, structured drills, open-ended conversations with the teacher or in small groups, and class presentations. Students will discuss current events in French-speaking countries, connecting with communities outside of their normal sphere of activity. Students will use technology to research cultural topics, comparing French culture with their own, and prepare class presentations on these topics.

French V

Full Year

French V offers continued refinement of the four skills at a higher cognitive level. These skills include listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Composition and grammar are reinforced through advanced readings. Students continue to develop conversation and presentation skills at a more advanced level through role-plays, conversations, and presentations. Students use technology to connect with the Francophone world through authentic resources.

Advanced Placement (AP) French Language & Culture

Full Year

The AP French Language and Culture course emphasizes communication (understanding and being understood by others) by applying interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational skills in real-life situations. This includes vocabulary usage, language control, communication strategies, and cultural awareness. The AP French Language and Culture course strives not to overemphasize grammatical accuracy at the expense of communication. To best facilitate the study of language and culture, the course is taught almost exclusively in French. For more information on the course framework, visit www.collegeboard.org.

Note: The AP exam is given in May. A fee is required to take the AP exam.

Spanish I

Spanish III

Full Year

In Spanish III, students continue to gain proficiency in the four basic communication skills. They review all previously acquired tenses, learn remaining simple tenses, as well as compound forms. The concept of the subjunctive mood is introduced and practiced through the four basic skills. Students build competencies in the five Foreign Language Standards through discussions, reports, skits, and proficiency-based activities. Ancillary audio visual materials are used to authenticate Hispanic culture, build vocabulary, and create an awareness of dialectical differences. Students continue to target, at a higher depth of knowledge, the five content standards, appropriate Common Core Standards, and Student Learning Expectations for Middletown High School.

Literature and Culture in the Spanish-Speaking World

Full Year

This semester course explores Spanish-speaking culture through literature. Literature types will include the short-story, legend, poetry and children’s books. Media and music will be integrated to enhance cultural awareness. Students will increase their vocabulary in the target language while exploring various cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. The course places an emphasis on reading, understanding, and reacting by speaking and writing in the Spanish language. Note: Students selecting this course must have a solid foundation in Spanish. Successful completion of level III or concurrent enrollment in level III (with the permission of the instructor and Director of Unified Arts) is integral to success in this class.

Spanish IV (EEP)

Full Year

In Spanish IV, students refine their listening and speaking skills as they become more able to communicate in the language. Through weekly journal writing students make connections with the Spanish-speaking world by discussing and writing about such topics as ecology, social change, politics, and the Hispanic presence in the United States. They compare Spanish-speaking cultures with their own through reading selections from different literary genres: drama, poetry, short stories and excerpts from novels. Students participate in role-playing, paired conversations, pronunciation practice, and free expression. Students intensively review and learn all tenses and moods. Students may elect to concurrently enroll in Spanish 113 offered through Rhode Island College’s Early Enrollment Program (EEP). Full Year

This course is designed for highly motivated students who have successfully completed the Spanish course sequence. The activities in this course enable the students to maintain and improve their fluency. Because this course meets during the same time as the AP Spanish Language course, the students will participate in many of the same activities. In addition, the students will work independently on topics. Students need prior approval from the AP Spanish teacher and the director to enroll in this class. Note: The AP exam is given in May. A fee is required to take the AP exam.
