Required Courses

Physical Education Grades 9 and 10

Semester

Through Physical Education, we seek to provide enjoyable and successful experiences that will promote physical fitness development, improved self-esteem, an awareness and appreciation of individual differences, and an interest in life-long activities to promote personal wellness. Students will develop gross and fine motor skills and a working knowledge of lifetime activities and fitness concepts. Students will assessed and monitored in a mandatory fitness unit. This program will help them develop patterns of lifelong health-promoting physical activity. In grades 9 and 10 emphasis is on developing the foundation through skill-based activities. During the semester, students can choose activities compromised of the following focal points: team sports, fitness activities, individual sports and life-time fitness activities. These options support the development of life-time and present fitness and recreational choices. In addition to physical development, PE and Health classes are focused on the skills that promote social emotional learning of the individual. They will be able to recognize and manage their emotions, develop care and concern for others, establish positive relations, make responsible decisions and handle challenging situations constructively and ethically (SEL).

Physical Education Grades 11 and 12

Semester

The PE 11/12 program teaches independence in a physical activity setting as we seek to provide enjoyable and successful experiences. The curriculum promotes critical thinking, teamwork, problem solving, improved self-esteem, an awareness and appreciation of individual differences, and an interest in life-long activities to promote personal wellness. Students will develop gross and fine motor skills and a working knowledge of lifetime activities and fitness concepts. Building on the 9th and 10th grade curriculum, students will be able to transfer basic skills learned to deeper strategies and tactics with their peers. These strategies benefit students physically, mentally and socially as they become proficient in a variety of physical activities in a social setting. This program will help students develop a positive attitude, gain confidence and develop a clear understanding of the correlation between a high level of wellness and physical activity. They will be able to recognize and manage their emotions, develop care and concern for others, establish positive relations, make responsible decisions and handle challenging situations constructively and ethically. Successful completion of this program will prepare our students for the challenges they will face as young adults.

Health I

Semester

Students explore concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention as a foundation for a healthy life. Students use strategies for problem solving, goal setting, and decision making to enhance their wellness. Students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to make health-promoting decisions, achieve health literacy, adopt health-enhancing behaviors, and the ability to promote the health of others. Units of study include: Personal Health, Stress, Tolerance and Bullying, Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases, Nutrients and how to read a label, Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco/Vaping, and Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Health II

Semester

This course builds on a student’s prior knowledge developed in Health I. It is designed to cultivate student’s critical thinking skills to equip them with the ability to distinguish facts from opinions and become responsible citizens, educated consumers and personal health advocates to make decisions to promote health-enhancing lifestyles. Students will achieve health literacy to empower them to make a positive impact their personal health and the health of their community. Units of study include: First Aid, Cancer, Healthy Relationships, Nutrition and Human Sexuality and Reproduction.

Elective Courses

Alternate Study Physical Education

(HS400004, SCED 08047) 0.5 credit

Semester

Eligibility Criteria Student must possess ONE of the following to be eligible for the course:

  • 504 Plan which impacts a student’s school attendance for greater than a semester

  • Documented medical waiver from a licensed medical professional excusing a student from attending school and/or Physical Education for longer than a semester

  • Evidence of college enrollment during the duration of the school day - hours of 7:30 am to 1:40pm

In addition, a student must have:

  • successfully completed previous Physical Education course requirements

  • a completed and approved Alternate Study Physical Education application by a committee consisting of a Guidance counselor, Physical Education teacher and an administrator.

Once the above criteria have been met and approved by the committee, a modified plan will be developed to meet the needs of each individual student who qualifies for the course.

Life Fitness

(HS400005, SCED 08016) 0.5 credit

Semester

This course is designed for students who wish to improve on their overall health and wellness. It will incorporate activities that the students can participate throughout their life as well as improve their present quality of life. The focus of this course will be to increase muscular strength, cardiovascular and muscular endurance, and overall flexibility and reduce body fat composition. Students will receive supplemental units involving nutrition, current health topics, and personalized training. Students will learn how to design their own individual fitness program. The activities will consist of strength training, aerobic exercise, plyometrics and team sports.

Physical Education Leadership

(HS400006, SCED 08995) 0.5 credit

Semester

This course offers students the opportunity to assist instructors in preparing, organizing, or delivering course curricula. Students may provide tutorial or instructional assistance to other students. The PE Leadership program prepares students to become effective teacher aides and strong leaders. There will be active participation in all activities offered at MHS’s Physical Education program where students will learn to lead group activities, develop skill progression, study the methods and techniques of teaching physical education, officiate a variety of sports to expand leadership skills, and apply knowledge of those skills in group or individually-led discussions or teaching opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to apply the skills they learn by assisting physical education classes. Prerequisite: Open to students in grades 11 and 12. Admission based on written application submitted to and approved by the Physical Education department during sophomore or junior year. Failure to comply with the MHS Student Handbook can result in immediate dismissal. Application available on the MHS website, under the Physical Education web page.

Adapted Physical Education Leadership

(HS400007, SCED 08995) 0.5 credit

Semester

This course offers students the opportunity to assist instructors in preparing, organizing, or delivering course curricula. Students may provide tutorial or instructional assistance to other students. It is offered to students who are interested in growing their leadership skills within a Physical Education environment. Adapted PE Leaders serve as peer partners in our Adapted PE classes. Adapted PE is for students who need modifications in their physical education class. Leaders will engage in instruction which takes place in class. Students will work one-on-one or in small groups with individuals who have a variety of special needs. They will provide assistance to their peer partners in the areas of preparedness, equipment and material readiness, and an introductory knowledge of peer partner’s challenges and necessary modifications. Leaders support breaking down knowledge barriers in the field or court. Prerequisite: Open to students in grades 11 and 12. Admission based on written application submitted to and approved by the Physical Education Department during sophomore or junior year. Application available from the MHS Physical Education Department Office. Failure to comply with the MHS Student Handbook can result in immediate dismissal. May be repeated for credit.

Access to Fitness

(HS400009, SCED 08052) 0.5 credit

Semester

*Students need to meet certain criteria to be eligible for this PE course. This course is an alternative physical education program centered around addressing the diverse needs for students in a Physical Education setting. It is designed for students who would like to experience a less competitive form of physical education. The focus of this course includes the learning of knowledge and skills that are associated with individualized and lifetime activities. This course is designed for students who struggle to be successful in regular Physical Education courses. It is not meant as an alternative to the four-semester sequence, and students will only be placed in this course by teacher recommendation and parental approval. The curriculum is designed to help students develop positive self-esteem regarding their physical skills and an appreciation of the lifelong implications of participation in physical activity regarding their contribution to a healthy lifestyle. There is a strong focus on the Social Emotional Learning needs of the student.
