A winch is a mechanical device that is used to pull in or let out to adjust the tension of a rope or wire cable. They can be powered manually with a hand crank or powered by electricity, gas or diesel, hydraulic systems and air compressors. Winches are used in many machines, but the most common uses of them are in sailboats, tow trucks, steam shovels and elevators. [16]
As you can see in the picture above, there are a few different types of winches. Each type has their own application which they are best used for.
An electric winch is best used for a short period of time to pull semi-heavy loads.
Hydraulic winches are best for pulling very heavy loads.
Air wenches are best in dangerous applications where electrical hazards can happen.
A snubbing wench is best used to pull and hold light loads, or help support another main winch in heavy-duty applications.
A lever winch is used to move heavy objects with precision.
A wakeskate winch is used for sports like snowboarding and waterskiing.
Glider winches are only used to launch gliders into the air.
A mooring winch is mostly used on large boats to secure the boat to shore.
Capstan winches are very versatile and are used in every industry.
Hand winches are best for personal use around your house or farm.
