Bevel gears are used when the direction of a shaft’s rotation needs to be changed. They are usually mounted on shafts which are 90 degrees apart but will work at other angles if designed for. The teeth can be straight, spiral, or hypoid. The curved teeth on the gear is to combat each tooth’s impact on the corresponding tooth as it moves. [4]
These gears are used in car differentials. The ring gear and input pinion gear of the differential are both hypoid, meaning it can engage with axes on different planes. The driveshaft of the car is connected to the input pinion, lowering the driveshaft, making more room for people and cargo.
