A chain drive is able to transfer mechanical power from one place to another. The power is conveyed by the roller chain, also referred to as a drive chain or transmission chain, passing over a sprocket gear. The gears are then turned which pulls the chain putting mechanical force into the system. [12]
Commonly used in bicycles and motorcycles to transfer power to the wheels and in a wide variety of machines. The chain can be used for velocities up to 25m/s (55.9 MPH) and power up to 100kW.
There are three main chain drives:
Hoisting and Hauling Chain Drive
Conveyor Chain Drive
Power Transmitting Chain Drive
