A constant mesh gearbox is a type of manual transmission used in automobiles. It consists of a set of gears that are always in contact with one another and only engage when a clutch is activated. The gears rotate freely on the shafts but stay in place by dog clutches. When the clutch is engaged, the gears get locked onto the shaft and transmit power from the engine to the wheels. That allows for smooth gear shifts and prevents the gears from grinding. [14]
There are many advantages of constant-mesh gearboxes. Some being that they have a simple design and low cost, greater reliability, faster and smoother gear shifting and better control over engine power compared to other gearboxes.
Common applications include motorcycles, light to medium-duty commercial vehicles, agricultural and construction equipment, small aircrafts and racing vehicles.
