A rack is a circular gear, and a pinion is a linear gear. Together they turn rotational motion into linear motion. In the automotive industry, this is how spinning the steering wheel makes the wheels turn right or left. The rack and pinion are enclosed in a long metal tube that connects the racks of the axial rods to one end and the pinion to the steering shaft on the other. [17]
Another application of rack and pinions are in track railways. The rotation of the pinion mounted on a locomotive or railcar engages a track between the rails and pulls a train up a steep slope.
They are also used in machine tools like the lathe and drill. [18]
