Luke 10:38-42
The Right Choice
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Matthew 5:29-30
Obstacles in our Faith
29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
Matthew 4:4
Man Does Not Live on Bread Alone
4 Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
To actually have Jesus physically in your house would be the greatest experience one could ever imagine...This could very possibly make one's life complete...
This story of Martha and Mary having Him over always intrigues me...Mostly because I used to be very much caught up in my career and job, and working many hours...On the weekends I would be caught up in my yard and the books I was always reading and trying to get caught up on...And always trying to give my wife the time she deserved, who also worked...I had some obstacles in my faith, and had a very weak faith...I really did not have much time for other things, because I was worried and upset about many things that needed always to be done...
When I first read the story of Martha and Mary, I sided with Martha...After all she was busy serving her LORD with all the necessary preparations, while Mary was not doing any work to help her sister...Isn't serving the LORD pretty important?... The LORD was actually and physically in their house...Today and everyday, I want the LORD to be in my house...So now I understand...
Jesus is the Messiah and our Savior...He was only on this earth for a short while...His word mean everything...Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God...Mary seems to know and understand this...While the world can keep us trapped and busy in worldly things, we can miss out on the most important things, the eternal things which He teaches...Mary knew His importance and was at His very feet, listening to His every word...She was in the right spot and the right time...When He is near, let us not miss Him, ignore Him, or be to busy to listen for and to Him...Jesus is the Messiah...He fulfilled the Old Testament prophecies...He was the One that was to come...Jesus brought the good news...He brings us the gospel...He is our Savior and LORD and Mary put Him ahead of job, busyness, work, and preparations...
Mary made the right choice...She knew that the Messiah was in her house...How very, very exciting...She wanted to hear every word He was going to say...Martha would be missing some of the things He was saying as she went about being busy with things...But Mary wanted to hear the wisdom and truths He had to bring to us and to her home...Mary was at her LORD's feet listening to every word of God...Mary wanted to hear everything...Mary was putting God first, and He was the priority in her life...We all should follow Mary's example...Mary understood Jesus is LORD...There is NO ONE else that holds and has more wisdom than Him...Mary would learn much from her listening...
