Matthew 4:1-4
The Temptation of Jesus
1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
John 4:24
God is Spirit
24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.
Jesus does not say man does not need bread or food...Notice how He says "bread alone."...Man does need his daily bread...Man needs this daily nourishment...But there is more to having all the food and water (or bread) in our lives, and still being able to live and survive...There is something else that man needs to live, and it is more important than bread...Food and water are only partially what we need to survive...We need this something else to live and get to tomorrow...What Jesus is telling us and does tell us that God is Spirit...That we need something else in this world besides the food that we are surviving on...We need God...Without God, who is in control, we cannot live...God gives us the air, the sun, the rain, and everything in this world -and without these things that God has given us, we would not survive...
Non-believers do not see this or believe this...They believe if they were stranded on a desert island and had an infinite amount of food and water, they could live and grow old with their food and drink...The non-believer believes, we are here randomly and this food and water they have (on their island) will get them by completely....Since they see us as here by chance, then they believe that, all the food and water they have is all they need to survive...The atheist does not see God controlling the weather, the stars, the moon, and the universe...The atheist believes all this food and water is all they need to get by...
The believer sees something else...They see a Creator, a Loving God, One who is control of our universe...Someone we need...Even at our our most basic level, He is there, along with our daily bread and drink (that we need)...Without Him, we would die immediately...We literally do not live on bread alone...We need God or we would die instantly...It is He who is in control, not the bread...
Jesus is explaining to us that God is Spirit...There is a Higher Dimension in the Universe out there...It is God...We need Him...God made us...He is our Creator, without Him how could we live...Bread is not enough and is not the main thing in our lives...Food and water are not the most basic of survival needs, when we understand that God is our Creator, and in control...Jesus makes us realize we could eat and drink everyday, but if God wanted to change that He can at anytime...The food and water are not what is in control of our making it to the next day -it is God...
I do not live on bread alone...Man is more than a body and only needing daily nourishment...Man is more dimensional than just mind and body...To be human is to be mind, body, and soul...We have a Spirit within us, a Holy Spirit that also needs nourishment...Without God we would not exist...We would be gone without His sun, His air, His sky, and the things that He provides...Jesus gives us a different perspective on God, with all His words, and even this trip into the wilderness by Himself...God is this Higher Entity we need, and what He says and comes from His mouth is what we need first...This Higher Dimension is Spirit, and we must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth, much more than we do only needing our daily bread...
