Vulnerability, Strength and Voice, a YouTube Chat with Angus Wright
Vulnerability, Strength and Voice, a YouTube Chat with Angus Wright
When: Sunday 2 June 2019, 3pm-4pm, YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/pxBThS5wee8
Angus Wright has used radical openness about his life, experiences and intimate emotions. This openness is not only a form of activism, but also resistance against the human rights abuses of his employers, a source of emotional strength, a big experiment and form of learning, and a way of connecting with others.

This was our first conversation, and we decided to take the risk and start live immediately, knowing that mistakes would be made. Immediately we ran into technical issues, which we found out later were caused by issues with the Google services due to high traffic. We started 20 minutes late, and on our phones instead of computers.
Folks were interested and did live view the conversation, even after the delay and the technical challenges.
We figured out the following learning points:
In principle, recorded conversations can be very low key and low technology. At the same time, it is hard to have a live conversation. Challenges are that all technology must work perfectly immediately, that there is extra pressure on the conversation to say what we need and want to say perfectly, that the entire conversation has to take place in one go. These extra anxieties can diminish the quality of the conversation. Although questions were prepared and shared beforehand, and we had discussed the content of the discussion, there was a bit of a disconnect. Perhaps next time this needs to be coordinated better, and we expect that when there is less pressure the quality of the conversation will be higher.
The conversation touched on a range of important points, for MUC. Examples: trauma, vulnerability, creating connections, activism. In terms of both our projects (MUC and Angus by Design), we feel these conversations can add value (esp since this adds to accessibility of these important conversations, as well as transparency and accountability of MUC).
We need to think more about how we want to use this, and what we need to do to make that happen in an efficient and effective way. Where is the conversation going to be posted, are we going to engage people live?
We had a conversation about the conversation almost immediately after, which we both experienced as valuable and important. This should be part of the process.
