***What Does Psalm 51:5 TRULY mean?
Here is Psalm 51:5 from the KJV. “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”
Does Psalm 51:5 say, “Behold ALL HUMANS are shapen to commit iniquity. And as SINNERS their mothers conceived THEM?”
NO! Absolutely NOT! But that is how some Christians “interpret” Psalm 51:5.
What some Christians fail to see is that Psalm 51:5 is a PROPHECY of Jesus!

Psalm 51:5 Does NOT say ALL HUMANS are Conceived in SIN!

What Does Psalm 51:5 TRULY Mean?
The first questions that some Christians might ask is “HOW can Psalm 51:5 possibly be a PROPHECY of Jesus?” For you see, we know that Jesus was NOT shaped to commit INIQUITY, and neither was Jesus conceived in his mother’s womb to be a SINNER.
And I totally agree! But I also add that NO HUMAN being was shaped for the purpose of committing iniquity. And neither was ANY human being conceived in their mother's womb for the purpose of being a SINNER.
For you see, the context in the very next verse teaches us that God desires TRUTH in the inward parts of man.
Psalm 51:6.
“Behold, You (Yahweh) desire TRUTH in the INWARD parts: (Or in the inward MAN of the heart) and in the hidden part You shall make me to know wisdom.”
So then, who is the pronoun “ME” referring to? Do the pronouns “I” and “me” refer to King David? Or do the pronouns “I” and “me” refer to King Jesus as a PROPHECY of Jesus?
In other words, is Psalm 51:5 a PROPHECY testifying of the Messiah Jesus who was MANIFESTED to bear the PUNISHMENT of INIQUITY? Was the Messiah, Jesus conceived in his mother’s womb for the PURPOSE to destroy the POWER of SIN?
Let us read Psalm 51:5 from the King James Version first, followed by a more CORRECT TRANSLATION.
Psalm 51:4,5 from the KJV.
“Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight: THAT (Or so THAT or in order THAT) You mightest be justified when You speak, and be CLEAR when You judge.
Psalm 51:5. Behold, I was shaped in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”
Psalm 51:4,5 being correctly translated by the Holy Spirit!
“Only, I BEAR (Or I ALONE BEAR) the evil done in Your sight: THAT (Or so THAT or in order THAT) You mightest be justified when You speak, and be CLEAR when You judge.
Psalm 51:5. Behold, I (Messiah, Jesus) am to BEAR the PUNISHMENT of INIQUITY; and FOR the PUNISHMENT of SIN did my mother conceive me.”
When you look up the meanings of the Hebrew word that is translated in the KJV as “shaped”, you will find that it also means to BEAR. Behold, I am to BEAR iniquity.
Here is how the concordance in E-Sword define this Hebrew word.

A primitive root; properly to twist or whirl (in a circular or spiral manner), that is, (specifically) to dance, to writhe in pain (especially of parturition) or fear; figuratively to wait, to pervert: - bear, (make to) bring forth, (make to) calve, dance, drive away, fall grievously (with pain), fear, form, great, grieve, (be) grievous, hope, look, make, be in pain, be much (sore) pained, rest, shake, shapen, (be) sorrow (-ful), stay, tarry, travail (with pain), tremble, trust, wait carefully (patiently), be wounded.
And Jesus was indeed wounded for our transgression to BEAR our iniquities, as in, to bear the PUNISHMENT of iniquity, which is DEATH.
When I saw these other meanings, I was impressed by the Holy Spirit to look up the meanings of the Hebrew word translated as “iniquity”, and here is what I found.

aw-vone', aw-vone'
From H5753; perversity, that is, (moral) evil: - fault, iniquity, mischief, punishment (of iniquity), sin.
And Jesus did indeed bear the PUNISHMENT for our iniquities.
Now, some Christians may argue that you cannot pick and choose which meaning fits your own belief. And I say, why not, for you see, that is what all translators of the Bible do, if we are truly honest with ourselves and with God. They pick and chose which meaning fits what they BELIEVE.
My main point is that Psalm 51:5 does NOT say, “Behold, ALL HUMANS are shaped in iniquity…” But yet, Calvinist Christians, Reformed Theology Christians, and Christadelphian Christians READ INTO Psalm 51:5 to mean that ALL humans are shaped in iniquity. The pronouns “I” and “me” do not mean every single human being.
And to me, neither was David nor Jesus brought forth from the womb to be SINNERS. For you see, the VERY NEXT verse teaches us that God desires TRUTH in the inward parts. And, to me, that speaks of God NEW creation of new creatures prophesied to be created in Psalm 102:18.
Also, notice that God is making either David or Jesus to know wisdom.
So, I asked God what Psalm 51:5 TRULY means, and this Verse Study was written to share with my readers what the Holy Spirit revealed to me.
Now, digging a little deeper into the word of God, here are the ways in which the Hebrew word that is translated a “shaped” in Psalm 51:5 is translated in other verses of Scripture in the KJV with other meanings.
The Strong's number H2342 is translated in the KJV in the following manner: pain (6x), formed (5x), bring forth (4x), pained (4x), tremble (4x), travail (4x), dance (2x), calve (2x), grieved (2x), grievous (2x), wounded (2x), shake (2x), miscellaneous (23x).
It is translated as BROUGHT FORTH in Isaiah 44:10, which is another prophecy of Jesus to be raised up in righteousness to build the city of God in verse 13.
Before we take a closer look at some more context of Psalm 51:5, let us read another prophecy of Jesus in Psalm 139:13-17, which CONTRADICTS the “traditional” Calvinistic interpretation of Psalm 51:5.
Psalm 139:13-17.
“For You have possessed my reins: You have covered me in my mother's womb. (Another way to translate this verse is, for You, Yahweh, have created me for the purpose of being a SACRIFICE. You, Yahweh, OVERSHADOWED me in my mother’s womb)
Psalm 139:14. I will praise You; for I am fearfully and WONERFULLY made: marvelous are Your works; and THAT my soul knows right well. (Here we see the exact OPPOSITE of the way Psalm 51:5 is translated in the KJV. And, we also see that Jesus is the WORK or the WORKMANSHIP of Yahweh. So then, Psalms 139 agrees perfectly with the way the Holy Spirit revealed to me how Psalm 51:4,5 should be translated and understood.
“Only, I BEAR (Or I ALONE BEAR) the evil done in Your sight: THAT (Or so THAT or in order THAT) You mightest be justified when You speak, and be CLEAR when You judge.
Psalm 51:5. Behold, I (Messiah, Jesus) am to BEAR the PUNISHMENT of INIQUITY; and FOR the PUNISHMENT of SIN did my mother conceive me.” I am fearfully and wonderfully made to be God’s Messiah to bear the punishment of iniquity and sin)
Psalm 139:15. My substance (Or my to be INCREASED or to be given power) was not hid from You, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. (Now, I myself do not see David being made in secret in the lowest parts of the earth. So then, to me, this is another PROPHECY speaking of Jesus descending into hell, the lowest parts of the earth, to bear the punishment of death for the iniquity and sins of the world, and the lead the captives free, according to Ephesians 4:8-15)
Psalm 139:16. Your eyes did see my substance yet being unperfect; and in Your book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, WHEN as yet there was NONE of them.
Psalm 139:17. How precious also are Your THOUGHTS unto me, O God! How great is the sum of them!”
So then, in the LIGHT of what David says in this prophecy of the Messiah being formed in the womb of his mother to be a SACRIFICE for our sins, let us now take a close look at the context in Psalm 51:1-8 in a more correct translation with the mindset that Yahweh has Jesus pray this prayer for the sins of the world.
In other words, David is saying this prayer for himself, but God makes Jesus to know wisdom that the Scriptures testify of him. And then, Jesus prays this prayer for God to clear the punishment of sins by Jesus offering himself as the one sacrifice for sins forever. And as Jesus prays this prayer to the Father in John 17:9-26, the cross is still BEFORE him, as in, right in front of him.
To say this another way, Jesus took our sins and the sins of the whole world upon himself as if they were his OWN sins.
Psalm 51:1-8 more correctly translated.
“To the chief Musician, (Or to the fallen angel Lucifer) A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. (In other words, David was inspired by God to write this Psalm after he committed adultery with Bathsheba) Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of Your tender mercies blot out my transgressions. (God inspired David to petition Him for MERCY and to blot out SINS. So, God’s HEART is not for mercy of just one man’s sin, but for ALL the sins of ALL humans to be blotted out forever.
So then, read these verses with the mindset that the Messiah asking God to blot out the sins of the whole WORLD. I will place the personal pronouns in light green in verse 2 to be less of a distraction. For they were added by the translators.
Then in the rest of the verses, I will not include the “personal” pronouns that distract from the true PROPHETIC meaning of this passage of Scripture)
Psalm 51:2. WASH me THOROUGHLY from mine INIQUITY and CLEAR me from my OFFENSE.
Psalm 51:3. Doubtless I, the SACRIFICE for transgressions and sin that is FOREVER, that is in front of me. (Or there is no doubt in my mind that I am Your SACRIFICE FOREVER for all the transgressions of the past and for all sins committed in front of me continually)
Psalm 51:4. Only, I BEAR (Or I ALONE BEAR) the evil done in Your sight: THAT (Or so THAT or in order THAT) You mightest be justified when You speak, and be CLEAR when You judge. (Or to You, to only You do I offer myself as You SACRIFICE for SIN and the EVIL that is done in Your sight. And I do this SO THAT You, Yahweh, might be JUSTIFIED when You DESTROY Lucifer and the fallen angels. And be INNOCENT Yahweh, or your NAME be CLEARED from be BLASPHEMED by your ENEMIES when you JUDGE)
Psalm 51:5. Behold, I (Messiah, Jesus) am to BEAR the PUNISHMENT of INIQUITY; and FOR the PUNISHMENT of SIN did my mother conceive me.” I am fearfully and wonderfully made to be God’s Messiah to bear the punishment of iniquity and sin)
Psalm 51:6. Behold, You (Yahweh) desire TRUTH in the INWARD parts: (Or in the inward MAN of the heart) and in the hidden part You shall make me to know wisdom.
Psalm 51:7. CONDEMN me, bear the blame on me. And I shall make clean with hyssop, the shedding of my blood: TRAMPLE me, and I shall make whiter than snow. (It is NOT Kind David that makes us whiter than snow, but rather, this WHOLE Psalm is a PROPHECY of King Jesus who bore our sins)
Psalm 51:8. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the BODY which You have broken may rejoice.”
Now, was the body of King David broken? Did David make us whiter than snow? I do not see that the body of King David was broken. But we do see Jesus breaking the bread and saying, this is my BODY which is BROKEN for YOU.
So to me, this more correct translation of Psalm 51:5 that you have just read in this Verse Study is the TRUE sound Biblical meaning of Psalm 51:5 in the LIGHT of the WHOLE word of Almighty God.

So then, my conclusion NO! Psalm 51:5 does NOT prove that EVERY human being is BORN with a sinful NATURE as Calvinistic Christians wrongly teach. But rather, every human being LEARNS to walk in righteousness. And sadly, some people LEARN to corrupt their own minds and harden their own hearts to SIN against their conscience.
And the TRUTH of the matters is that every man has sinned at some point in the life, we all have FALLEN short of the glory of God the He prepared for ALL humans BECAUSE we all have SINNED at one time or another in our life.
And thus, God CONCLUDED all humans to be under sin so that He could have MERCY upon ALL humans.
Once you truly understand that it was Satan, the DEVIL, who entices us to SIN, then you will know and understand that God made man and the Son of Man a little lower than the angels for the PURPOSE of SILENCING His ENEMIES, according to Psalm 8:1-6.
Now sadly, Christadelphian Christians do NOT believe that Satan, the Devil, is a REAL literal BEING. And the Christadelphian Christians ALSO wrongly believe, as well as, some other church denominations, that God created EVIL and that Yahweh is the CAUSE of all of the EVIL in the world.
Plus, Christadelphian Christians, as well as other church denominations such as the Roman Catholic Church, sincerely, but wrongly believe in the FALSE doctrine or original sin. And thus, they build their other man-made doctrines upon the false doctrine of every person being born with a so-called sinful NATURE.

Then you can understand that God made His human Son to become a Lord, a King, and a God, to JUDGE Satan and the fallen angels.
