Flux: Levels, earned through accomplishments
Flux is a measurement of the amount of magical energy which forms your soul. In the past, most creatures had 1 Flux. Now, the surge of magic allows characters to readily gain Flux and grow stronger. Characters can feel it when they earn Flux, but they do not measure flux numerically like we do. There is simply the feeling of more or less Flux than before.
Each character has a unique Flux design that visually manifests when they use their powers.
On death, characters may gift 1 point of their flux to up to 3 other characters they knew and were close to in their life. The recipients of this departed soul shard will feel as they usually do when gaining 1 flux.
Flux is earned for truly impressive acts. Completing a quest, participating in group events, and doing certain art/writing challenges will reward your character with flux. Flux can be earned for out of character actions that benefit the community, like setting up events or quests for other people, developing helpful spreadsheets/programs, world-building, etc.
The only way to gift another character flux is to die. On death, players may gift 1 point of flux to 3 other characters that interacted with their own. It is recommended to give these parting gifts to characters with strong attachments to yours.
Flux earnings are tracked in the Character Tracker spreadsheet, which a DM will set up for you when your character is accepted into the group.
Flux earnings scale depending on your character's current flux score, making it harder to earn more the higher it already is.
1 - 24 flux = 2x rewards
25 - 49 flux = 1x rewards
50 - 74 flux = 0.5x reward, or a 1d2 dice roll
75 - 100 flux = 0.25x reward, or a 1d4 dice roll
100+ flux = 0x reward, or a 1d∞
This scaling lets new characters catch up to older characters more easily, reducing large power gaps. At high levels, flux rewards less than 1 flux will be determined by dice/coin flip.
